I gave up sleeping at +11 and tested Chuck and fed the whole crew. He tested at 274 +11 and I didn't want to give insulin at that point, although I probably should have. Slept through the 5 am normal test, feed and shot, and he's at 474 +13, so gave him a shot and more food. Darn! If sleep and work just didn't get in the way!!! <smile!>

Should I have given his 1U at +11 and 274 or was it better to wait? Not that it makes any difference now, but for future reference...

You might've needed to shoot 12 hours from that, or less. You have to find what works with your schedule.

Shooting at +11 can start to mess with your schedule.

But you fed him at +11 so your AMPS was food inflated and not a true number.

If you had not fed I think your AMPS would have been much better so it's not as bad as you think it is.

So, how long do you wait to get away from food inflated numbers? His AMPS was 2 hours after he ate -- was it still food inflated?

You're right, after 2 hours the food should not be influencing the numbers. I missed that the shot was an hour late. The insulin probably pettered out by then.

GRRRRR!! Fur shot tonight, he's going to be miserable and his numbers are going to be atrocious. I HATE the long U40 needles, but it's easier to do a full unit on them over the U100 syringes...

A couple of questions tonight...
Hubby is scheduled for knee surgery on June 24, and we have to be at the hospital (an hour away) by 5:30 a.m. How do I handle Chuck's shot(s) that day? It's day surgery so we should be home for the evening shot (5 p.m.) but I don't want to shoot AM at 4:00...

Also, my 83 year old mother will be having a hip replacement. We're in Texas and she's in Iowa. Since I've always done Chuck's care, I'm trying to figure out the best way for hubby to take over -- I anticipate being in Iowa about a week. I don't know at this time if I'll drive or fly; if I drive (15 hours minimum), I can take Chuck with me because my mom lives in senior housing and they allow pets. If I fly (2 hours flying time, rent car, and about 2 hours to mom's), I'll have to leave Chuck at home.

Have any of you primary caregivers turned your sugar baby's care over to another person for a period of time? How did you transition?
 
Hubby, who will be my back-up if I go to Iowa after my mom's hip replacement, keeps asking if I should give Chuck a shot. NO, NO, NO, I keep telling him. It was a fur shot and I have no idea how much insulin he got; even if I gave 1/2U, I'd be up all night testing to be sure he didn't go too low.

I really need to clamp down on hubby if he's going to be my back-up. I keep telling him it's a 12-hour insulin, guess I'm going to have to write everything down for him, too!

Frustrated tonight -- hate fur shots, hate those stupid long U40 needles...
