6/10 PM Starting Lantus in AM

Finally got my lantus from Mark's today in the mail!
We will be switching over from Prozinc in the AM tomorrow. My husband is awake from about +4 onwards and I am home around +8. He usually gets me a check around +6 or so, although we've kind of slacked off on testing recently a little just due to the fact that Tigger isn't responding to Prozinc. I will go back to more frequent checks with the switch.
I was going to go with 5u in the AM. My vet suggested starting at 2u. Based on what I was told here, I was recommended to start at 7u, but I am a chicken and am super worried since it is a new insulin.
My question is, do you think I am fine to start him on the lantus at that dose tomorrow since I will be at work? My husband can get a check anytime if something seems off, but he doesn't keep an eye on Tigger quite like I do. He does have access to food all day.
Also, should I be following the TR more or SLGS? I was doing more of a TR with the Prozinc, or trying to.
Just nervous for the switch tomorrow. Wish us luck and thank you once again in advance.

The hardest part is going to be un-learning a lot of what you learned on ProZinc and wrapping your head around a depot insulin like Lantus.

When you first start Lantus, it's usually 5-7 days before you see the true effect of the dose so it's probably going to be several days before you see much of anything.

Occasionally a cat will have a drastic reaction but those are the exceptions.

I'd start at the 7U but if you just can't do that, you could start at 5 but you may spend a lot of time working your way back up which could just allow glucose toxicity set in.

Lantus isn't really "stronger" than ProZinc...it just works in a different way.

I can do the 7u. I guess I just needed one last push of reassurance. I feel like we already are dealing with some glucose toxicity so that's not something I'm hoping to continue dealing with.

Well luckily, by the weekend his depot should be starting to fill so hopefully you'll be able to be home with him when things might start to get "interesting"

So far as SLGS vs TR - The guidelines for TR say:

"Hold the initial starting dose for 5 - 7 days (10 - 14 consecutive cycles) unless the numbers tell you otherwise."

So you don't really have to decide between SLGS and TR now. You can see how he does.

TR will allow you to increase faster if you find you have started at too low a dose. If we find after three days you are a solid wall of 300 or above, we might be able to fast track increases.

Will your husband test tomorrow? We suggest getting +3, +6 and +9 to start. If you can't monitor, I'd wait to start until a day you can more closely monitor.

I will be home all day Sunday and planned on getting a curve, even though it's early in. I went with 6u. I really tried to get myself to do 7 and I was having flashes in my head of all the bad things that could happen, even though they won't. And even though 6 is only one unit lower. I am a chicken. But it's in, I did it.

I told my husband to do a check at both times and I can do +9 myself. He will be home all day, just usually in front of his computer working.

Tigger was 310 at AMPS, just for the update.
