I am trying to be patient, but I am just feeling frustrated and confused by all these high numbers.

So.... If anyone could take the time to read this and the reply below and give me their thoughts and opinions I would really appreciate it!!!

So I went to Petco last night… I got the smallest bag of the chicken freeze dried treats in the dog section. They are purebites brand. I got the ones in the dog section because its a 1.4oz bag and the cat ones are only a .6oz bag and so the dog ones are cheaper per ounce.

I was breaking up the treats and putting them in a container... just to make it easier at test time... and some of the treats seem like really wet and greasy when I went to break them in half... This is the second time I got a bag of treats like this....I have never had this happen with the cat ones... I was thinking maybe since the chunks of chicken are larger they just didnt get dried the whole way through so when I broke them up thats why they were moist in the middle.....

Is this normal and still okay to feed the cats? I guess the only reason I am concerned is because... if there is moisture in the treats wouldnt that cause the treats to spoil faster?

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 Question about treats

I actually just found this review that someone wrote regarding this moisture in the purebites treats. This explains exactly what I was concerned about "that smushed into slimy/greasy mush when I crumbled them." This is exactly what happens as I am breaking some of them apart.

"ORIGINAL REVIEW: I bought two 6.2 oz bags of PureBites Chicken for dogs, first trying out a small cat size pouch found at PetSmart, and then moved up to the dog-sized bags/chunks, which I crumble with my fingers to get them smaller for my cats, who love this product BUT both of these bags purchased on Amazon had rancid chunks that smushed into slimy/greasy mush when I crumbled them.

The company admits this happens, said it's part of the processing, nothing can be done, but it's not acceptable, and they will refund once I send proof of purchases & invoice to them.

So it's hit or miss, and the company agrees...so just an FYI to warn others to check their bags!

For those feeding this to dogs, and not breaking up the chunks like I do, please take note of this and check on the chunks before feeding. You can also detect a faint rancid odor if there are rancid bits in your bags.

The reason for the rancid chunks, according to the company is that pieces of fatty chicken do get in, and fat doesn't freeze-dry, so without preservatives, it will go rancid. I knew that, but had hoped they could offer a promise to correct this; they can't and have no intention to do so. So I'll keep buying and hoping I get good bags, but will certainly take the time to get refunded whenever this occurs.

The product is excellent when you get a good bag..just check each piece before feeding, or if you have a good nose for rancid odors, take a whiff and you'll smell the slight rancid odor, and can return the product."

""UPDATED APRIL 2012: I'm returning 6 more pouches of PureBites Chicken today, after first calling the company for instructions. The same rep (female) who responded to my complaint in Dec 2011 took my call today, but not knowing I had called before, she kept insisting there has never been a complaint about rancid bits before. I told her I called in Dec and she said "someone else likely helped you". Not wanting to argue, I moved on, but she clearly lied to me so I thought I should update about this. I was asked to include a note this time, to say where purchased but that has nothing to do with the fact that the company thinks it's "acceptable" that some fat is getting thru via processing. Fat cannot be freeze-dried so it will turn rancid even if freeze dried - read my original review and see how this was answered the 1st time I called last year...Very disappointing that the company doesn't care to hold the processing plant's feet to the fire about fat getting in, but then to lie to a customer is not good. But they will honor their satisfaction guarantee! So the only way to get this issue resolved is for all of us to get refunds. All you need to do is send the proof of purchase and your invoice to the address on the bag, along with your name & address. I find that about half of the bags are rancid. Dogs don't care, but cats won't eat rancid anything so very expensive if issue is ignored. Pls help make this company fix this issue by sending proofs in and forcing them to refund. Companies ignore issues until their wallets get hit. I hate to do this, but my cats beg for these and I'm going broke replacing rancid bags!"

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 Question about treats

I usually get the store brand Prime Treats at Petsmart. I've never had that problem. I also order freeze dried duck breast and heart treats from http://www.justwheatfreedogtreats.com/poultrydogtreats The hearts can be a little oily, but have never been rancid. Once I open a package I put a little in a treat tin and the rest stored in the freezer.

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 Question about treats

Yikes, Jamie - I would return. We have enough to worry about without adding rancid treats to it :o :o How can a company think that is ok? Wish I could help on the numbers, just can send good thoughts that Jupiter comes down.

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 Question about treats

I recently broke apart a big piece of freeze dried chicken breast and was surprised to find it moist and greasy inside and I just threw it out. I have a huge bag of Prime Taste Treats. I hope the rest are okay.

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 Question about treats

It was more then one piece that was like this.. 2 of the pieces so bad that as soon as I picked them up out of the bag my fingers got really greasy from them... Throw those 2 out... but a few others I broke apart not thinking.... and put into the container of treats... so now Im not sure what to do... because its going to be hard to pick the bad ones out.... or if 1 bad treat will spoil them all...

I really dont wanna get my babies sick from these treats!

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 Question about treats

Well I called and left a message saying that I had some questions and concerns about a bag of treats and would appreciate a call back. Hopefully they will call back today... I just want to make sure these arent bad!!

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 Question about treats

Ugh...we have seen this, too. I just toss the gross treats (I don't know why I didn't think to pursue the issue), and so far haven't had any digestive issues with the rest of the bags. But now I'm concerned because of the responses and lack of concern from the company. I'm going to look into different treats now, too. Thank you for sharing this!

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 +5.25/196! Question - tre

Looks like Jupes numbers are going to come down... Hmm... he just had to come down on the day I have appointments!!! *sighs* better now then never though...

not sure what to do now.... need to leave here in about 2 and a half hours and will be gone for approx 3 hours...

so need to leave at about +8 and wont be back til +11.....

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +2.5/263 +5.25/196! Question - tre

Okay well I just got a phone call from purebites. They said they could possibly refund me if I shipped them the product so that they could see it. I told them that I already broke most of the pieces up, and threw away the "greasy" ones.

PLUS to ship this product back would cost almost just as much as the treats themselves cost!!!

She said to throw out any "greasy" pieces and then the rest SHOULD be fine IF they dont smell rancid.

She also said I can try to email them with a very detailed description and its a possibility that they will refund me but not very likely since I cannot mail them the bag with the bad pieces.

Kinda disappointed in their response to this!!

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +5.25/196! Response from purebites

Jaime, Take it all back to Petsmart, even if it is just in a plastic bag. Even if you don't have your receipt, they will give you store credit. They never give me a hard time. We spend enough money there

Go gently down Jupiter - hope you can make your appointments!

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +5.25/196! Response from purebites

Its from petco not petsmart... not sure if they will take it back though because I already threw all the bad pieces away?

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +5.25/196! Response from purebites

They probably will. With all the bad pet treat issues, I think they'll take it back. Just like if you bought something from the grocery store and it was bad, they take it back.

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +6/215 +7/152 Response from purebi

I am scanning and emailing my receipt as requested by purebites when they responded to my email. Gonna see if they take care of the problem and if not I will try at petco

:-D Glad Jup is coming down!!

In regards to the Pure Bites. I have gotten some pieces out of the bag like that...I just throw them away. I have been using the Pure Bites for almost a year now....never had any tummy problems.

Go Jupiter! That's great that you can be around to monitor today. It will be interesting (as always) to see what he does. Those rancid treats sound disgusting.

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +6/215 +10/100 Response from pureb

My cats love the purebites brand so I hate to have to ever switch brands.... I mean I understand ocassionally getting 1 bad treat... but I hate to have to throw away 10 or so big chunks of treats - its a waste of money... and they did say to throw those ones away because they could be rancid... sounds gross to me!

Thank you all for your opinions and comments. I really appreciate it.

SOOOOO HAPPPYYYY to see Jupiter in nice numbers again!!!!!!!! :-D

Re: 6/10 Jupiter AMPS/300 +6/215 +10/100 Response from pureb

WTG Jupiter!! Nice numbers :-D
Jamie, I had purchased 3 of the little bags of freeze dried treats at Petco. Three different flavors. I think they were about $3 apiece. I was telling the cashier about trying to find a low carb treat for my diabetic kitty. She told me if Cleo didn't like any of them, save my receipt and bring them all back! And when I did return them, a different cashier gladly refunded all my money, and encouraged me to keep trying different snacks. Their return policy is excellent!

Awesome! If purebites doesnt refund or send a different bag I will do that! Thanks

Re: 6/10 Jupiter PMPS/79! Response from purebites

YAY JUPITER!!!

I'm just now getting caught up on your condo ~ interesting about the PureBites.
Ripley eats several flavors of PureBites from Petco (shrimp, chicken, turkey).
We've been buying them since her diagnosis in Nov. of last year ~ we've gone through MANY bags, and have only found several 'greasy' pieces. It never even occurred to me they may be bad. I'm glad I tossed them. But we haven't seen any adverse reactions in Ripley from the rest of the treats. We also haven't found more than 1 or 2 greasy pieces in a bag, and have gone through many perfect, grease-less bags. I tried a different brand (less expensive) several mos. ago, but Ripples wouldn't touch them. She's hooked on the PureBites brand.

THANK YOU for posting about this issue. I'll keep my eyes open for 'off' treats; and I hope Petco and/or PureBites helps you out with refunds!

Have a great night!

Re: 6/10 Jupiter PMPS/79! Response from purebites

I've tried Purebites chicken and shrimp, no problems yet. I just picked up a new brand from Walmart - Full Moon "dog" treats freeze dried chicken. It was only $10 for 4.7 oz, a pretty good deal, and it says 100% human grade ingredients (which are simply chicken and rosemary extract).

So far no problems with grease in these, and the price is so good!

Very interesting condo today Jamie. I've been noticing the quality on the Purebites chicken doesn't seem as good as it was. I wonder if they have a different supplier? I just threw away some expensive freeze dried duck tongues that had gone rancid. Should have taken them back to the vendor. Lesson learned.

On another topic - look at Jupiter go!!  And you are so calm and collected Jamie. :-D You are doing great, just casually shooting that 79. Great BOS tonight.

I think I am getting a lot more comfortable shooting these numbers... as long as I test frequently... I know he wont go too low. (plus I am learning Jupes cycles better) I didnt even think twice about tonights shot :-D When I was a noob I think Jupiter was scared by all the low numbers... but now I tell him "its okay baby boy dont you worry mommy wont let you go too low!" When hes low like this, and when my kidneys are hurting... I think he somehow just knows... Cause he lays in bed with me... and sometimes he will get up for a bit... but usually comes back before the next test time

I am a lot more comfortable shooting low now that I feel like I know what I am doing a little better. I sometimes still have lots of questions, but I feel like I have learned a lot! Thanks to everyone here!!

Thank you everyone for the comments/ suggestions/ and visits today!!!! I am going to try to visit more condos tomorrow

Nice shooting! Jupiter, now you surf safely tonight

I'm really interested in finding out what is happening in the 30-60 min before the shot now - a 79 when he's rising feels very different from a 79 when he's falling. It certainly is a process of learning and becoming comfortable with what we experience, then having to learn new things as our kitties keep changing and keeping us on our toes!

+4 was 110... so it seems like his numbers might come up.... since his nadir is late in the cycle though i am thinking I will wake up around +6 to see where hes at.
