523 glucose! is he gonna die?

I'm brand new to feline diabetes my cat was diagnosed less than a week ago. I've been monitoring his blood and giving him glucose since last wednesday. I got home from work super late and checked his levels and they were 523 (16 hours after his insulin injection this morning). I gave him his normal insulin dose of 2 units. What should i do? i set my alarm to check it again in 3 hours. Do i give him more insulin if it is still up?

No, dont give more insulin tonight.

For tonight he will be ok. Just try to get back on his regular schedule. Test before you shoot insulin tomorrow morning since you gave his shot late today.

Human diabetics would be in the hospital with that number but cats are a bit hardier. We have a saying here, that its better to be high for one night than go too low and hypo. Thats why you wouldnt give another shot if you think you gave a fur shot (ie, missed the cat)

you meant to say that you have been giving insulin since wednesday, not glucose right?

oh and Kudos to you for already hometesting and being in the vampire club!
 
Thank you so very much! I'm terrible at testing his blood, his poor ears :(. Thanks so much, i'll sleep much better, and next time i'm stuck at work i'll just come home and then go back!

Let us know if we can help. Like sometimes the gauge (size) of the lancet makes a difference, putting some pressure on the ears to stop the bleeding can help bruising. Some folks use the lancet devices, I always freehanded.. I felt I had better control.

can you tell us more about your kitty?
what is his/her name?
what kind of insulin is he on?
How did your vet arrive at his starting dose?
How and when was your kitty dx'd?
what kind of food is he eating? is this a new diet ?
are you testing for ketones? ( you buy the strips at a drugstore -- you test the urine for ketones )
what kind of meter are you using to test?
how old is your kitty?
how much does he weigh?
does he have a history of any other health issues?

I hope you have not been giving him GLUCOSE, but have been giving him INSULIN.
 
fwiw, that # while high is a number all of us have seen in our own newly diagnosed kitties. so help us help you and please tell us more.
 
could you also post where you are located. ya never know. someone may live near enough to lend a helping/starting out hand. you would be surprised who might possibly be near by. and a face to face discussion gets it all covered at once.
welcome to the place you never wanted to be. you are doing great. hang in there and always ask here if unsure of something. someone is usually around since folks are from all around the world
