My mom's cat, also diabetic, 1/2 unit 2x day, 10 yr old male, 15 lb
has a history of constipation.
it's been 5 days since last bowl movement and I was wondering if there is anything we can do here at home.

Last time this happened, I felt the trip to the vet was a bit ridiculous.
They kept him for 6 nights, administered about 8 enemas, none of which worked... and finally gave him a laxative, which resulted in poop!
Why didn't they do that before 6 nights and $800 ?????

Any suggestions appreciated
Thank you.

I had a cat that had chronic constipation and they gave him enema after enema at the vet to no avail. I finally told them to give him Sub Q fluids, He was also on Lactulose for it(constipation). After the Sub q fluids he finally did pass stool. I would put him on Miralax, about 1/8 teaspoon once a day so that he does not have this problems again after this. You can always increase it a bit if needed.
I also currently have a cat on Miralax for really hard stool, I just mix it in the food. You can start him on the Miralax but that does take a couple days to work.
If he does not poop soon you are probably going to have to take him to the vet, but I would not let them keep giving him enema`s as I do think it is hard on their kidneys and I would not let them keep him for more than overnight at the least.

GO TO THE VET

If you try to push rock hard feces through now, you may rupture his intestinal tract and he could die.

He may need fluids in addition to an enema to soften up the stool.

Also go to Feline Constipation and read more about how the GI tract works and what can be done.

You can use Miralax to keep it from happening again but it will not work on anything already in the colon. It only works on new stool. Another thing you can try is coconut oil.

The reason your cat was there for so long is because many vets are incompetent when it comes to cat constipation. Sometimes the enemas are useless and the vet needs to manually work it out. It depends on where it's at and how hard it is. You might want them to start out with an xray. It would save time and be less stressful on everyone. Personally I wouldn't go back to that particular vet again. Especially for this issue.

After you get him cleaned out, start him on Miralax and fluids if you can. Then hopefully you won't run into this issue again.

Shortly after Dusty was diagnosed he came down with a bad case of constipation, I gave him some warm milk and cat grass and all was good that night. Now I give him some cat grass at least once a week to keep him regular.
