It's so interesting what you find out when you do testing through the day. Based on Vesta's mid-300's to low 400's at shot time, I never would have guessed that she was bottoming out in the 100's during the day :) Kinda makes me hopeful! Neither of us will be home for the +4 or +6 today, which is too bad. Hopefully tonight. I'm anxious to see what the nadir numbers are more than just once, as I'm (obviously) ansy to get her on a doseage that doesn't give her such high pre-shot #s.

Don't worry about not being able to test every two hours today ;) You have to live your life too. Get the tests you can get while living as normally as possible... there may come a time or ten when you have to cancel plans to stay home and test/feed your cat when her numbers drop fast or something but today's probably not that day =) Get an out the door test and leave her food so she can eat if she needs to. She's got pretty nice numbers today! Enjoy yourself =) Looking at your ss you fed her some kibble so I would doubt she'll go very low. Have a great day!

It's why getting those tests is so important!! It also let's you know that those high pre-shot numbers are bounces. If you based your dosing only on the AMPS and PMPS, you'd keep raising the dose and, no doubt, Vesta's numbers at mid-cycle could get too low. This is great data to have.

Marvie is right on all counts. Please make sure to leave plenty of food out.

Re: 5/9 Vesta AMPS 350, +2~249

You guys are very right- testing when possible, as well as living life. I wish we were living it today- just work for both me and the husband. DH did the +2 as he was leaving. I'll be home by +8, or +8.5. Of course, missing the nadir.

As for leaving food out- it's really tough to make food last any amount of time in our house. Between Vesta and her civvie sister Ellie, whatever one leaves in the bowl, the other scarfs down. (*see side note at bottom about that*) I'm giving them ~200-240 calories each per day (Ellie's 9lbs and Vesta's 12lbs) so I think that's appropriate- am I wrong? Any suggestions? How long do everyone else's cats typically let food hang around their bowl for?

*Side note about food- It's very difficult to police who's eating what food after the initial serving of the meals... We typically watch them for 5 minutes or so to make sure they don't immediately switch bowls, but after a little bit they inevitably switch (though we try as much as possible to stop them). This wouldn't be an issue if they were both on the same diet. Ellie, the civvie, would puke every time she had wet, so we couldn't really feed her that. We're slowly weaning her on, and are now at about 1/2 bowl wet, 1/2 dry. No pukes for about a week :) When we can get Ellie on 100% wet puke-free, this whole feeding debacle will be, well, less of a debacle.

Re: 5/9 Vesta AMPS 350, +2~249

I would be attentive to what foods Ellie pukes on. Many kitties have food sensitivities to beef and fish flavors. Likewise, food with gluten can be a source of food sensitivity. (If you've not seen it, there's a list of gluten-free FF flavors on Janet & Binky's list.)

My guys play musical food bowls, too. They get the same food so it's not an issue (unless I'm giving my civvie the remnants of a can of HC and then I watch like a hawk). Many of us use timed feeders if we're going out of the house. That way, at least we know food is available over the course of when we're gone if numbers are running low and Vesta will feed herself if she needs food to bring her numbers up. You won't have a guarantee as to who's eating unless you are at home at some point and can monitor who's eating when. It's also an emotional sense of relief for me to know that when I'm at work, there's food available.

I like the idea of the auto-feeder... Any suggestions on brands? For portions- do you dimply divvy up what she'd eat for breakfast into smaller portions? (Ha! Portion control for felines :) Do they make autofeeders for people?)

Hi guys I just bought the petsafe 5 meal feeder at petsmart & I really like it, it makes life a little easier! The testing is so important & it helped us to get otj! You are doing great so far! Hope u will join us @ scrabble's party today!:)

Re: 5/9 Vesta AMPS 350, +2~249

Hi Weathergirl, So happy to see that you like our winter-like spring weather. You can have it! Auto feeders are great. I have two, the Petsafe 5 compartment, and the CatMate 2 compartment. I prefer the CatMate because the first compartment stays open even after the 2nd compartment opens. Also, it includes a cold block. (The Petsafe 5 is a wheel of 5 compartments that rotate into a single opening. If the food in the first compartment isn't eaten by the time the next compartment spins into the opening, it will be unavailable (under the cover). This isn't a problem for most people, but Stu typically doesn't eat all his food at once and expects to come back to it and find it.
Send Vesta to Scrabble's party tonight. She'll get to meet all the kitties. And welcome to LL (a little belated).

Ella & Stu

Ahhh, I was hoping for a lower PMPS, but I guess with all the activity of having my family over for mother's day dinner, having her at least shoot "normal" numbers is good, right? She totally hammed it up for attention, which she hasn't done in a while. During dinner, she strutted over to our buffet table and jumped up, lounged, and decided to bathe herself to prove she was less of a caveman than us mere humans. After sufficiently clean, she jumped down, walked over the my 78-year-old grandma, and jumped on her lap! Just like that! She's never done anything like that before! It was like she was saying "Mom feels bad for me because of the whole 'betes thing... so I'm going to see what I can get away with!"

Good times, good times. This week is going to be a bit stressful for her. We're refinishing the hardwood floors in our house mon-thurs, so the kitties are hanging out at my parents house with my husband- I'm staying with a friend closer to work (otherwise my commute would be around 1hr 15min or so). DH will be doing all the shooting, which he's comfortable with, I just feel bad not having me to split the work with. I'm not expecting much progress to say the least.

I'll keep 'yall posted...
