Yesterday went really well until the human erred & we had a PM partial injection. As Maus is feeling better, she's getting back to more 'normal' behavior, and for her that's no touching; she doesn't bite, but it's a really effective squirm-to-release move. I have a good hold and she's reasonably cooperative for the ear pricks, but am struggling to keep her still for the injections and think in my haste and attempt to hang on, I'm punching through or she pulls away. I need to work on that.

Suggestions welcome.

She's begun taking evasive measures to keep me at bay; yesterday when it was time to come in from the greenhouse she pulled a last second slip 2 steps from the door & if not for the pouring rain, I think would have stayed out all night (major no-no where we live). ugh, patience dear.

I must say, I'm a bit jealous of those who go through all of this and still have a snuggly cat (wink)

Good injection this morning.

Is she just taking evasive moves at shot time? What size needles on the syringe? Are you doing the bevel side up? Hometesting Links and Shooting Tips
Yes, I always check the bevel & we're using 31g 5/16 SureComfort needles.

She avoids me pretty much all the time now, but I can lure her out with the 'poking fish' (sardines). We're okay with testing, but the insulin seems to bother her & she squirms. I found the roll method with a not quite dry hand works well, but frequently when I think I've got a good one, I'll feel a little bit of wetness, like part gone through, or, she just pulls away. With the needle, I don't fight her. She's pulled away as I'm injecting & had a bit of insulin at the injection site, I'm assuming from her pulling away as I'm shooting. I've experimented with a dose amount of water on her fur, and I'm not missing the full amount, seems more like a drop or two, but at only 1.75u, the drops count. The vet always has assistance when vaccinating her, but I'm not so lucky. The 'old' vet who used to own our clinic was lightning fast (pre Maus) & quite the wonderment to watch. Guess I have injection envy ;)

All the videos I've seen show a cat that sits relatively still, and that is not my cat. Even the one growling, wrapped in a blanket is sitting there; Maus wouldn't sit still long enough for the first fold, much less a full wrap (experience from pilling) and squirts out in a panic. The operative word here is panic. She's effectively an incredibly sweet barn cat who previously would come in at night to eat (and not be eaten). As such, she's very wary and easily startled. I give her pets and head scratches as much as I can between pokes, but she knows what the stuff looks like now & 'heads for the hills' so to speak. Even before this, she'd abide about 5 seconds of holding then squirm away in what seems like a panic. She's nearly all indoor now, seems to be okay with it, but remains ever vigilant.

There's probably not a lot I can do beyond more practice; it's just frustrating to focus so hard on something & still not have it go 100%. It's like I have 2 shots at it per day, trying so hard to get it right and, dang . . . another wet spot :(

I can only offer my empathy and sympathy here, I am one of the lucky ones with a very cooperative sugar cat. You are doing better than I would I'm sure! Sorry to hear of the struggles, that sounds so difficult mentally and emotionally. You are doing the best you can for Maus, I'm sure she senses this in her own way. :bighug:

One of things I was wondering was whether it's the Lantus bothering her. It has an acid base that can bother some cats, though more so on larger doses. But I have seen cats on small dose object to the sting. My Neko sort of tolerated Lantus, but she would walk away sometimes in the middle of the shot. :banghead: But she purred through Levemir shots. I shot after the meal - she took about 30 seconds to wolf it down. But then she'd go to her bed and we have some lovin' and shot time then.
