Maggie had a bad reaction to Miralax. The instructions yesterday were to give her 1/4 tsp. in food, which I did so. Not too long after I gave it to her, she tried to move her bowels and was really straining to the point where I saw a little blood. She did that twice. The bleeding stopped and it was only slight, but it alarmed me how quickly the Miralax took effect. I'm wondering if 1/4 tsp was too much. Overnight she had some diarrhea, but it has stopped. I won't give her any more Miralax until discussing with Vet. I worried all night, so took her BG and was shocked as she's never been this high since early diagnosis. With her antibiotic the Vet approved her taking it in a pill pocket. They gave me a sample packet of chicken pill pockets. One of the ingredients in the pill pocket, besides chicken, is dried corn syrup! Could this tiny bit have spiked her bg, or is it the diarrhea now caused by the Miralax. To sum it up from yesterday, the urine culture showed an E-coli tract infection, but her bg numbers were good up until this morning after I gave her the antibiotic pill inside the pill pocket and the Miralax for constipation. She's acting okay, but I am worried. I will call Vet's office first thing tomorrow morning.

I don't understand what's going on with Maggie's BG. At +8 she was 208 which is high compared to how well she's been lately, and now her AMPS is 236! I guess it's the infection causing the rise. Since giving the antibiotic, she seems to be urinating more often and small dribbles. The loose bowels have stopped. No more Miralax for her. She has been eating FF Salmon and Wellness chicken, and appetite is good. I'll be ready to shoot shortly, so hopefully during the numbers will come down. Thank goodness it's not a holiday weekend and Vet's office opens tomorrow,

Well Ann...ABs cause diarrhea usually so that is why we use the Fortiflora...those pill pockets and the infection might both be causing higher BGs but definitely the pill pockets would do that. I have never used any pill pockets myself so I hope someone who has experience with them will chime in here....
Personally, I don't know if the Miralax would cause such a speedy reaction. From what I understand, it is more of a fiber filler in their system. When there is fiber in the form of Miralax, we add more water to their food so that the water will help bulk up the fiber making the stool easier to pass.

Are you giving her fortiflora to help add friendly bacteria to her intestines? The ABs wipe out all bacteria and we need to replenish the friendly bacteria with probiatoics. Fortiflora is available online...maybe one of the affiliates listed when you click on the box at the top of the page...:"DONATE - SUBSCRIBE - SHOP " ABs cause diarrhea so I am not sure why you would need Miralax anyway at this time. Miralax is usually given when there hasn't been any bowel movements....can you tell me why you are using it at this point?

You might want to get suggestions about pilling Maggie and stop using those pill pockets. Some people put the pill in a little piece of chicken and they get it down that way. Of course, with the added carbs, the kitties LOVE those pill pockets. Getting the ABs inside is what counts so you will have to make sure she gets the meds in some way.....

Ok...I just read your condo from yesterday...Sienne said Fortiflora is available at whole Foods so if you could get some at your local whole Foods place, it would be good.

Thanks Pat. Actually believe it or not, it was the Vet who recommended Miralax and also the pill pocket. Very strange, huh! This wasn't her regular Vet but another one in same clinic. I sure regret using it, as I think it set her back. I will order some FortiFlora online. I take it the pet stores don't sell it. We do have one market here that sells a lot of vitamins and health foods, so I'll make a call when they open. I think I can pill her with just a piece of chicken. She doesn't fight me and is such a good sport.

I'm guessing that it's the UTI is at least, in part, contributing to the blip in numbers. As far as pill pockets, I've not used them either. I suspect it depends on how carb sensitive Maggie is. When Gabby snagged a couple of Temptations, it caused a jump in her BG. If you think about how quickly our kitties respond to HC food, it wouldn't surprise me if the PIll Pockets were bumping up BG. You might want to try other alternatives -- hiding the pill in cream cheese, a chunk of chicken, someone here used Laughing Cow cheese, etc. -- that are LC.

From what you described about the frequent urination and dribbles, it sounds like the UTI is peaking. That may be why the jump in BG numbers. It's good you caught it when you did. Keep an eye on Maggie's numbers in case dose needs to be bumped up. However, I think once the AB kicks in fully, her numbers will come back down.

Miralax is not a fiber-based laxative. It does nothing with regard to adding fiber. It works by increasing the water volume in the intestinal track. It's the fluid that caused the liquipoo. Gabby had the same experience with it and I'm pretty sure it made her feel bloated and uncomfortable. However, Pat is correct in that the ABs may also contribute to diarrhea. Usually, though, it takes a couple of days for an AB to effect the GI track. FortiFlora is a good preventative measure -- it's available through Amazon or PetFood Direct. (I didn't say it was at Whole Foods -- a different probiotic, ReNew Ultimate is available at WF.)

Thanks Sienne. Yes, poor Maggie. She was back and forth so many times to the litter box, covering and covering up every little dribble. She has seemed uncomfortable. Her regular Vet did say to call if her #'s go over 200, so he must have suspected they would rise. I will call first thing in the morning. Right now she's sleeping like a log with her paw covering her face.

Hi Ann, If you can't find Fortiflora today, you might try giving Maggie a little plain yogurt (the kind with active cultures). Some cats like yogurt and it would help to get the "good" bacteria into her intestinal tract. Just a thought, as yogurt is often given to people who are on courses of antibiotics. We hope that Maggie will be feeling better soon.

Hi Ann and Maggie, I have been gone all day so I just saw your posting!!! You poor thing so worried about your Maggie! I heard the pill pockets can cause higher bg's and if she is easy to pill I would try something else! I have almost a whole box of fortiflora that I bought when Scrabble was on ab. I only used a few packs so I would be more than happy to send you out a few packets to get you started if you aren't able to get it. PM if you would like. Which ab are you on? I am sure once all of this stuff clears she will be right back on track. Although we will not have a condo anymore I will still be on al ot checking on all my friends! Have a great night!
