Good Morning LL! ~O) ~O) ~O) We need it this morning, both beans were wiped last night and decided to see if she would use the feeder at night, since she was still rising at +4.5. I think Tess slept through the night (like her beans) and missed her food. Very hungry kitty this morning! Still in the blues though, nice flat sur but, we may need to get up to be sure she eats even if we don't think we need to test. OR perhaps we need to rethink her meals. Tess has much less appetite at night, so perhaps a little more earlier and skip that late night meal. We usually need to wake her up for it anyway.

The pitfire was fun (big potluck dinner), but I won't get to see anything until Thursday. Talk about patience pants!

Liz, the Giro is on Universal Sports Network. We have satellite and had to order it as an extra. They will have a lot of Olympic coverage in August too, but we will probably cancel it again after that and the Vuelta. Until next year. ;-)
WCR All 5 Ps, Clean Plate Club, and totally confused by beans that get up earlier than her shot time! confused_cat

Re: 5/7 Tess AMPS~150

Beautiful blue morning for Tess. Maybe a nice slow slide to the lagoon today?

Zener eats more at night and the auto feeder is working very well to give him a little something overnight. We use the 5 dish rotating one so there is food available 1-3 am and 3-4 am. That way, we know he hasn't eaten for at least an hour before his test at 5. We don't know how much he eats and how much Tillie the civie eats but we think he eats most of it. In any case, he hasn't done a scarf and barf in the morning since we started using it.

Thanks for the tip on the Giro. I don't have time to watch anyway so I definitely won't pay for it.
Liz

Re: 5/7 Tess AMPS~150

Its a nice start today for Tess. She doesn't use her autofeeder? Sounds like she's pretty wiped at night too if you have to wake her up to eat.

I noticed walmart has a brand of kitty treats called Special Kitty Treats, i think its supposed to be like the FF hors d'oeuvres treats, anyways i noticed that it has Guar Gum as one of the ingredients. Can you remind me what guar gum does again? Is it for constipation?

Have a great day Ann and Tess.

Re: 5/7 Tess AMPS~150 +3~139

Another blue surf day. :-D :-D We really need a blue smilie too.

Liz, I like USN as they tend to show other sports than the big pro types, problem is they bundle it w/ a lot of those networks so they can charge more.

Tracy, Guar Gum is used primarily as a gluten free thickener. But it is also a soluble fiber (like oatmeal) and apparently has the same type of action as Miralax. I thought it might be better to give Tess daily than Miralax, so now we only give Miralax if she doesn't poo for more than a day. She sometimes skips a day, which isn't unusualy for cats eating raw food. I found the info on the Guar Gum on Dr. Lisa's page on making raw food. It was an update to the page last year.

Nice blue surf for Tess!
May I know where to get the guar gum? And how much to use?

Re: 5/7 Tess AMPS~150 +3~139

Yay for sleep and blue kitties! Glad you all got some rest last night. You must have needed it. Hope you have a great day Ann!

Re: 5/7 Tess AMPS~150 +3~139

Nice blues for Tess this morning. Glad you had fun at the pitfire. I had no idea so much went into it, yes, patience til Thursday. Maggie won't eat from the feeder either, but she will eat food left overnight, strange kitties with their fuds. Have a nice day, Ann.

Re: 5/7 Tess AMPS~150 +3~139

Very nice blue for Tess today. I agree, we need a Mr. Blue face, after all, some low blue is still healing right?

I'm stating Daphne on the auto feeder this week. So far, I just let her eat out of the removable dish, and she seems to like that, fingers and paws crossed.

I guess we all needed to sleep last night! :-D

Helen, I get the Guar Gum at a health food/vitamin shop, or you can order online. We give Tess about 1/16 tsp twice a day. Here is the info I found on Dr. Lisa's Making Cat Food page:
April, 2011 update: One of my cats, Robbie, has an anatomical abnormality in his rectum and needs to have his stools softened to facilitate defecation. I have been using guar gum which is a soluble fiber source and it is working very well.

I purchase the guar gum from Whole Foods Market or online here.

There are two types of fiber sources: soluble and insoluble.

  • Soluble fiber traps water in the stool, thereby softening it, but it does not swell as much as insoluble fiber. It is fermented into compounds that can be helpful for colon health.

Insoluble fiber (e.g., cellulose from vegetables) also traps water but it swells - adding bulk to the stool. However, this is not what we want for cats. Cats are not designed to eat a high plant fiber diet that results in a high volume (large diameter) stool.
Vegetables contain predominantly insoluble fiber making them much less desirable for treating constipation in the cat.

I have been adding ~1/8 of a tsp of guar gum to 3 ounces of a meal of the recipe on this site + plus an extra ~2 TBS of water. You can experiment with a bit more guar gum and water if you want to. (I am not adding the guar gum to the whole batch of food since I am playing around with the amount.)

Even if you don't plan on making cat food there is a lot of good information in this article.

Re: 5/7 Tess AMPS~150 PMPS~119

Gettin' right down almost to green, Tess. Rusty said that you were a good boatswoman today and didn' t decide to go swimming. Good girl!

Do you get the Versus channel? They do all the bike races.

Have a good night's sleep tonight. Rusty sleeps all night, too, but does get up from time to time to eat from his bowl. We bring his food upstairs at night.

Ella & Rusty
