Hi Gayle, His ears are so tender and have little scabs all over them. He's been feeling bad, of course, doesn't walk well or jump well. So, I really hate to poke him 6 times. Maybe I should, though, as he may have a low BG test in the morning, and I'll have no info for proceeding.
Some people put polysporin or some cream on the ears for healing, and some use finer lancets.
I never poked on the vein or there would be lots of blood and scabs; I poked near the vein and would get just a drop which was good enough for the test. Be sure to apply some pressure to the spot to stop the bleeding and it should cut down on big scabs.
You really need to know how the insulin is working, so how else to find the low point in cycles if you don't do a curve? I think finding a way to deal with the healing and maybe even switch ears if you like, is better than shooting and not having any idea if Max is going way too low and needs a decrease, or if Max is staying high all through the cycle and needs an increase! Without knowing what's happening in the middle, you can't make an educated adjustment to dose, if needed.
Do you poke both ears? What size lancets are you using? Are you pointing an ointment on the ears after poking?
I'll do a curve, but not today. He's bouncing again now with a 540 at +6. Glad I didnt start one. The scabs are very small. Thanks for the tip about the vein. Once in a while I get a lot of blood. I'll start using the flashlight again and try a finer lancet.
