I dont know what more I can do, but shake my head. At least Im seeing somewhat of a pattern.
1. Drop low...dont know how low because most of the time she is doing it on a cycle when I am at work. I dont suspect its below 100, though.
2. BOUNCE next cycle beyond belief...sometimes taking 2 cycles or more to get there.
3. VERY HIGH flat
4. Slower drop - still high and flat
Repeat cycles 1-4

Carolyn/Big Mac would have a hay day drawing pictures with her curves.

I found Latte this a.m. laying by her water bowl, but no water gone over night. No food either. She did eat REALLY well on last nights entire cycle (lots of wet food, too!), so I was not terribly concerned. This a.m. she is spending more time drinking water, but has eaten a little. I have a late start today, so will be around until +4 to encourage as much wet food as possible. No real activity beyond that, other than trying to maintain her beautiful stature on her throne.

I noticed a bit of wetness on a throw rug near her LB , and a dried up wet spot around it on the floor this a.m. I think it was urine. Im really hoping she just could not get to the box on time. Its apparent she DID make it to the LB at one point, however.

I asked a serious question late last night in my condo regarding quality of life for diabetic cats that have regulation issues such as hers. With her renal disease, I know what to look for when her QOL is diminishing (its called - 'crashing'). With her GI disease, I know what to look for when QOL is diminishing. I know where my limitations are for her in those areas. But with the FD, I dont know?! Obviously I want to do everything I can to help her and figure this out. But, if there is nothing that anyone (vets, collaboration on board, me) can do to keep her from dangerous numbers than when am I doing her a disservice?

Libby responded with a question of how is she in the high numbers? Well...as always, its hard to know what is what. When she stayed lower and occassionally had spikes she did not handle the spikes well. But they passed quickly. When she is very high and flat (400's) she drinks a lot more, chokes (from drinking), more incontinence issues, but seems to eat well. She seems to WANT to be social, but ends up being very crabby. When she is in these 500+ numbers she has no appy, or desire to drink (weird). She just wants to sleep and does not appear to feel great.

I hold on to hope that I can figure out how to get her down AND keep her a little more flat. Changes are on the way - reduction of pred and hopefully a clearing infection. Next week is a little more mellow, schedule wise - so if stress is involved maybe it will decrease.

I have to shoot 15min or so early tonight and will miss the first half of her pm cycle due to work. Tomorrow night is the start of our three day weekend, so I will reduce pred at that point. Still debating on if I should keep her insulin dose the same and risk a big drop (of course leading to a great bounce), or reduce insulin in hopes to prevent that and increase as needed. Although, the meter already is not measuring how high she bounces...so really, how much higher could she go if she dropped too low??? I will take cheryl/winnie's thoughts in account, along with what she is doing leading up to tomorrow night.

I hope everyone has a great Wed. I was happy to have some time to catch up with a few folks last night! I hope in the days to come I can do a little more of that. BTW...does anyone know where Barb/Checkers are? And Nancy/Bee???? I worry about them.

Re: 5/5 Latte AMPS-526, +2-448

Morning Carolyn... Nancy & Bee had family issues awhile back...a long while back....I think about them a lot too. No idea about Barb and Checkers...hope they are all okay...
My heart goes out to you and Latte and all your concerns. It's good to see your condo even though I am NO help at all with the serious issues. I just want to stop by and say hello and send millions of HUGS to you both! :YMHUG:

Hi Carolyn,
I think that the long term effects of hyperglycemia are risk of neuropathy (affecting limbs and possibly eyes), glycosuria causing increased risk of UTI, risk of DKA, and possibility of dehydration due to excess urination. There may be increased workload on the kidneys. You are the best judge of how she is feeling, and correlating that with her BG's. Good luck with the pred reduction!

I don't have an answer to your question about the long term effects. There are certainly people who struggle with unregulated DM and don't seem to mind. As far as cats, I honestly don't know. Can your vet consult with an endocrinologist at the U of MN -- both to answer your question and maybe to get some insight into Latte's numbers?

Hi Carolyn,
I'm so sorry to hear about Latte's spikes and no concrete answers. I'm still fairly new here and don't know the full background, but you've probably had other Vets' opinions, internal medicine vet at a specialty hospital maybe. I wish someone had some answers for you.

Re: 5/5 Latte AMPS-526, +2-448, +3-420, +4.5~382

She seems to be coming down from this high a little quicker than Monday, yet not too fast (so far) for her.

I moved her wet food next to her kibble bowl this a.m. when she was attempting to eat kibble. She went for the wet instead. I will keep it there while I am gone today and see if she eats any of it.

I'm so sorry, Carolyn. I wish I had some answers for you. All I have is positive thoughts, prayers and hugs. Sending them all your way. You're an amazing mama bean to Latte.

Re: 5/5 Latte AMPS-526, +2-448, +3-420, +4.5~382, +9.75~201

Ok this is curious. She is clearing MUCH SOONER than she has been. I hate that I have to shoot and run tonight and wont be home until probably her +6.

I think she ate a little of the wet I put by her kibble bowl, but also ate some kibble.

I wonder how fast she lost it, or if she went lower and is on her way up.

Hi Carolyn, I guess it's times like this that we really do wish our kitties could type! Stu and I are sending Latte all good thoughts and we hope that when you return this evening she will show you some more signs of her old self. Thinking of you both always,

Ella & Stu

Re: 5/5 Latte AMPS-526, PMPS~247

the only way I know of to bring down high numbers is with more insulin. I don't see any recent numbers low enough to prevent you from increasing the dose to bring her range down. I know you're decreasing the pred, but you can always decrease the insulin later once the numbers start to improve, if they do. That's probably what I would do, but you have a much better understanding than I do of how all of Latte's factors come together.

((((Carolyn))) you're doing fine, I know it's a balancing act.

Gosh you guys! I am a little nervous over here. I am fine with where she is, tho the impending bounce I fear. Im just not certain which way she is going and how far down she could take it. I dont know when she last ate, other than the 1/4 jar babyfood before pmps. She is refusing all food at the moment. That makes me most nervous. I am glad I got home earlier than I thought.

Maybe I will try some more babyfood in a bit.

Hi Carolyn. I'm sorry that you and Latte are having such a rough time. I understand your frustration and your worry. You do such a marvelous job with your baby. I hope she eats for you tonight and you manage to avoid the big bounce. Hang in there.
