uh oh... That never wins favor.

I'll share a funny story.
My cat back with my college roommate. The cat would do the cat calling like cats do when they are in heat ( she was spade but still did the call)
and my roommate decided to use a water spray bottle directed her way to deter the behaviour.
My cat gave her the most evil look as she ran away from the water.
The very next day while the roommate was gone, My cat went and either peed on her pillow or pooed... I don't remember.
So my roommate closed her door to keep the cat out .
The next morning, my cat pooed right in the middle of the door threshold so that of course my roommate stepped in it as she came out of her room.

The next day my cat pooed in one of her shoes ( washable flip flop ) and she kept everything she owned in her room from then on and quit
spraying the cat.
I think I kept my cat in my room for a few days to help her mellow out. ;-)

She had quite the memory and held that grudge for 3 days.
Not all cats take kindly to being sprayed with water.

Oh that's hilarious. I've been very lucky to never have had a spiteful cat. I think he was simply saying it was time to change the litter (my fault, too busy with work last week to notice the obvious). I just gave him three  boxes and mixed the litter with some crystals for extra absorbtion. Given the excess urine with his elevated numbers it can't hurt.

Would ketones be any reason for him to be going outside the box? I really don't understand the whole ketone thing.

Ketones wouldn't be a reason for a cat to pee outside of the box. I'm linking an article from Pet Wiki on ketoacidosis. There's a section at the bottom that describes how ketones develop. I hope this clarifies. If not, let me know.
