Hi all
Just wanted some advice RE: Tiggy's BG levels. He was lowered from 2 units x 2 to 1 unit x 2 of Lantus (per my vet), but, I haven't given him any insulin in the past 5 1/2 days as his BG was going down (again per my vet). The vet advised to hold off on the insulin for now and just feed him his low carb canned meat (which I'm doing). However, his BG levels have mostly been in the 100's (blue). Should he actually be getting a very small dose of insulin [0.10 or 0.25] in order to get him a tiny bit lower? I've continued to feed him no/low carb canned cat meat, and do periodic testing for ketones in his urine (always negative). Any thoughts or advise? Thanks!

Note: the vet thinks his BG numbers are fine where they are...My vet feels that keeping him below 180 is fine..but I want to make sure he stays in the 40-120 range.

you do have that option to do the tiny dose.

If I were you, I would get random mid cycle tests.... not just the pre-shot ....
remission cats will generally drop a few hours after eating..... so test.... feed... and then wait 3 hours and see if bg goes down some.....

vets don't tend to think of dosing less than 1 unit....
they seem to think we are micromanaging....
and we are. :p

I can relate to you wanting to make sure this pattern holds.... and that Tiggy stays in the ideal range.

If you find numbers creeping up... or not dropping some after feeding....
then I would do the microdosing.

Even though Tiggy's treatment was short....
once a diabetic, always a diabetic.... you just become a diet controlled diabetic.

How about getting some spot checks? The pre-shot numbers are not consistently in normal range. I think if we have some clue what's doing on a couple of hours after you feed Tiggy (i.e., is his pancreas kicking in and are numbers lower than at pre-shot times) we'd have a better sense of what's going on.

I'll get some more mid-cycle numbers. I was thinking about that. My vet said something about him already being in "remission", but I'm like, umm, I don't think so. And, I don't care if I'm
micro-managing my diabetic sugar baby. Love both furry babies.

It does look as though he might be heading for remission, but I agree that checking him a few hours after he eats to see what's happening then would give you a better idea of whether there would be some benefit to micro-dosing him to reduce the numbers just a little more. He's not horribly high, but he is just a touch outside of normal range at least some of the time - micro-managing really does seem to work well for our diabetic kitties. :)
