Happy Sunday!!! We are sending healing vines out to Gus, Rocket, Jackson, and Tray AND any others who need them. We continue to send prayers to Sienne's DS.

Gracie seems a little more perky today and she is eating well, purring, and the two bodily functions are in place but not alot of playing this morning. I suppose it could be the change in weather....it's gotten so much hotter quickly. She's been out on the enclosed patio with Tobey and me and she's been watching birds and running back and forth across the patio. She had a lovely night last night until I overdid the carbs, again. Because she has changed so much in her response to carbs, we are having to figure this out all over again and experiment. Next time we get a low number on her, we are going to see if she will respond like most kitties.....we'll try the LC food in the 50s and HC in the 40s and see if she has changed the way she accumulates her carbs. Always a science experiment going on the Blaine household.

Newbies: we use karo because Gracie "accumulates" carbs and then zooms up. So if she is low and I give her HC, she won't show it in her numbers; so I give her more and FINALLY she will come up but she'll skyrocket so we've been trying to just use her normal LC food with a tiny bit of karo to control her drops and to bump her up a bit. But for most kitties, it is better to try and control their curve with LC food and use HC food/gravy if they are getting too low (40s).

Rough night with Teddi last night. Yesterday she ate gangbusters; she is a finicky eater and her food always has to be the right consistency, the right temp, and put in the "right" place which constantly changes. She was obviously hungry last night but wouldn't eat anything I offered her no matter what I did. So I finally mixed up some A/D and syringed her.....she gulped it down like she was starving. (I have to say our cats are all great about being syringed...we start them learning when they are babies). I don't know if she can't smell her food; if her tooth is bothering her and when she puts her head down, the tooth throbs, or what. She's on bupe and clavamox and I can't see any infection or anything different in her mouth. This morning she ate a little regular food and then I made the A/D in a slurry and put it on her plate and elevated it and she cleaned it twice so at least there is some progress. She worries me to death...such a tiny girl. She sees the vetty again this week.

And on the nature front, our momma hummingbird that made a nest on a hummingbird bauble I have hanging from the patio, hatched two babies last week or so. They are getting huge. They are so cute....they flip their little bottoms over the edge of the nest to poop  Of course, there is little, tiny hummingbird poop on our patio but it will clean off. We took one of the kitties HUGE carriers and took the top off and padded it with a bunch of blankets as hummingbird babies are notorious for the larger of the two pushing the smaller one out of the nest; it's about a 12-13' drop. I just couldn't take it if I found a baby dead on the patio. Hopefully, if one gets pushed out, it will land in the carrier and be ok. nailbite_smile nailbite_smile They are starting to get really big and it is so cool when the momma feeds them. Here's a photo of momma on the nest before the babies hatched:

Time for more ~O) ~O) and catching up with my darling DH. So GLAD to have him home. Will check in with you all in a bit. Have a great day.

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222

LOVE the pic and stories of the hummingbirds. i have them around here but haven't ever tried putting a nest out for them. maybe i'll do that next year. the chickadees on the front porch are apparently quite territorial - the folks at Wild Birds Unlimited told me a pair of chickadees wants an acre of their own for their nest! piggies!

thank you so much for the loan of the pants. :o we can call this the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants! i mentioned in my condo that the last time i could've gotten those pants over my thighs i must've been 25! but i'm going to put those on my right calf and i know they'll work that way too. see, my patience is already better! ;-)

sad face on Teddi feeling punkish. i can imagine anya being like that. she's a delicate little thing. if i didn't protect her food she wouldn't get any, because she hangs back so far punkin would eat it all. i hope teddi gets back to her normal self soon!

enjoy your sunday! it sounds lovely there.

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222

Wow - love the hummingbird pictures - really awesome to be able to watch babies. Not a bad cycle - cool on the greens - it is always an experiment with these kitties, to figure out what wil bump them and what will big time push them higher....always learning! Hope Teddi feels better amd eats better....

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222

You gave me great advice last night, but, of course, I overdid it because that low number coming out of the blue kinda freaked me. I'll do better next time and not overreact...I think...I hope!! :-D I only missed a reduction by 2 lousy points!!

Thanks for hanging in there with me, especially with you dealing with your own kitties!!! I appreciate it!! :-D :-D

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142

awww what a nice story. love hummingbirds :-D

Thanks for telling me to hang in there...she's in greens :-D

Happy Sunday!

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142

That is one of the coolest things I've seen. You should send that pic in to a birding site - bet it would get some laughs. Amazing.

Hummingbird babies would make me smile every day. Wishing they both make it and none need the soft landing ;)

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142

Gracie is coming right back down, this is a great dose for her. I hope you can convince her to stay for a while.

Love the humming bird pix. We just get doves, they build in my wall planters right next to the dow and then get all huffy when we use the door.

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142 +6 168

Hmmm...back up at +6 but she did this yesterday, too. Hopefully she'll continue to follow the same pattern as yesterday....until the part where I overcarb her :-D

Julie: we didn't put that nest out there...she MADE it!! I thought it was hysterical that she made the nest on top of the hummingbird thing....I have several of those little bauble things on the patio and she picked the hummingbird! Sounds like the chickadees are pretty territorial. Glad you liked the patience pants!! Yes now we have KTSS and STPP...Sisterhood of the Travelling PATIENCE Pants  Anya and Teddi :YMSIGH:

SHerry: no kidding...esp when they change!!

Patty: you didn't overreact!!! You did great. Gosh I wish I had a nickel for everytime I gave Gracie too many carbs...inc last night. Sometimes *I* think it's better to make them really earn their reductions but that is only MHO! Hey...you're welcome. Nice to have the company!

Natalia: YAY!!! Enana's in green!!!! Happy Sunday to you, too.

Karrie: I know...we took some film pictures because we have a zoom lens so we'll see how they come out. I hope they both make it, too.

Ann: yes, so far....I hope we can convince her to stay, too. Today is just her sixth cycle and on the last dose, she didn't really kick in until the 11th cycle so we'll see. As long as she is doing this, I won't take her up. So funny about your doves....don't they have the sloppiest nests??

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142 +6 168

Great photo.....That is such a small nest....the babies must be really, really small.

More pics please. ;-)

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142 +6 168

Hi Marje, that is amazing that she made the nest on top of the hummingbird thing. I love the pic. It looks like Gracie is coming down nicely. So sorry Teddi is not having a good day. Hope it gets better. Enjoy the rest of the weekend; it's flying by so fast. Hugs

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142 +6 168

Goodness, quite a bit of activity going on over there today.. I'm sorry you have to start over again, sort of, with Gracie, but you always seem to make it better for her. I'm sure she'll be sporting those pretty colors again in no time.. I don't like that your little Teddi girl isn't feeling up to snuff. That's great that you can syringe feed her if need be.
The hummingbird nest is amazing :-D . I get the Birds and Blooms magazine and there are numerous pages of them in there this time of year. Some times we have 5-6 at a time at our feeders and I love to photograph them regularly.
What types of Hummingbirds do you have there? I've only seen the ruby throated at our home.
This might seem like a dumb idea, but i see you have wood beams where the nest is built. Would it be a bad idea to hang some sort of safety platform with the blankets and suspend it from the wood beams 3-4ft below the nest that way the fall wouldn't be so far.. Which by the way i think is really awesome that you have the kitties bed filled with blankets in case they do.
I have never seen a baby hummingbird, only juveniles and grown ups.
Wishing all of you a wonderful evening and Special times with Mike these couple of days you have together ;-)

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142 +6 168

Gracie seems like she's having a nice blue day today, as opposed to those greens she was wearing last night. Is it just me or does she only seem to come down really low at night? She must want someone to have a pj party with her. Poor Teddi, sounds like she did have a rough night, hopefully she's on the mend.

Love the hummingbird pictures, how long do hummingbirds live for? My parents always have 3 hummingbirds at their house every year and i wonder if its the same ones over and over again. They play and fight over the sugar water that my mom puts out. Leo ate one a few years ago....no one knows if he actually caught it or if it was already dead, kinda hard to picture a cat catching a hummingbird just because they are so fast. We also have the ruby throated hummingbirds around here as well.

Have a great evening with the hubby and kitters.

Re: 5/29 Gracie AMPS 260 +2 222 +4 142 +6 168

hi guys -- sorry to be MIA today... aiyee! I just had to get things caught up around here, bummer.

What a nice night for Gracie last night - great numbers. I know on the foods... been there with Mannie: what works one time doesn't always work the next, etc.... Frustrating, isn't it. I cannot count the number of times I have over-carbed Mannie. Well, they will clear it soon enough.

I hope all is well with Teddi. Poor little girl. Be well little one. You do take good care of her.

WOW on the hummingbirds - that is kinda cool.   Thanks for posting a photo. and I so hope nobody gets booted....

Re: 5/29 Gracie PMPS 143

Just a quick note before dinner and then I'll get back on later and respond. Thanks for visiting today. Gracie came up to 221 late in the cycle so we were very pleasantly surprised to see this number. I hope she has a lovely cycle tonight. YAY that Mike is home. He's so great at managing her curve.

Well...meat loaf is ready so time to get the rest on. Will be back in a bit.

Re: 5/29 Gracie PMPS 143 +2 129

Busy night. Teddi was doing the not eating thing again after eating well during the day. Mike finally got her to eat. And Gracie wouldn't eat which was making me not happy. It appears she did not like what was on the menu tonight; when I gave her something else, she cleaned her plate. Amazing that we got to eat altho it was almost 9.

Tena: they are small but they are getting much bigger. I really worry about whether there is room for both in that tiny nest.

Ann: yes...I'm happy with Gracie's cycles esp since we are only on 7th cycle tonight.

Lauren: I'm happy with Gracie's numbers even if she went up a bit because she hasn't had any of the color we won't mention in a few cycles anti jinx. I don't think your idea is a bad one at all but I don't know how hard it would be to screw stuff into the wood....or if Mike would do it. I hope we have enough of a safety net for them if one falls. We have several species here but not ruby-throated. One of the coolest is the Magnificent. They are HUGE! The babies are cute....their beaks are very different...shorter and fatter and then they get longer and thinner.

Tracy: that's cool that your parents have them. They can live a very long time. We've been in our house 8-1/2 years now and there is one that migrates up from Mexico every spring and then leaves in the fall. We call him "Boss" and can tell him from the others....he's very aggressive.

Michelle: no worries...I was MIA today, too. I know....those carbs...what will we do? Yes...Teddi is a tiny, thing now. She used to be bigger than Gracie but she has lost weight....she's like a little old lady.

Barb: thanks!!!! I'm happy!!

my sis lives in LA area and has hummingbirds nest at her place. maybe they nest in the south, although i see hummingbirds here nearly all year round. i put out feeders when it's not fuschia-blooming season. we get the ruby throated ones too, plus another kind, i think it's called an Anna hummingbird.

i thought that was something you put out that was for hummingbird nests. you'd have to be careful putting anything underneath the nest because it might provide access for a predator.
