5/29 Charlie Update, 473 AMPS, 456 @ +1.5

I apologize for my absence. My aunt passed away and we've been making funeral arrangements. Springtime has been busy as I'm trying to get my yard cleaned up and garden started. With all that and also taking care of Charlie, I've been a little burnt out.

The update on Charlie is that things haven't really improved. :( In my last post, I tried going to a different vet, they were unable to do the SpecFPL test so they ordered in the SnapFPL and told me they'd call me when it arrived. I haven't heard from them since.

Charlie had another rough night. When I got home from work I could sense something was off. He was slightly lethargic but still played with me and the new toy I got him. But it got worse very quickly. Starting vomiting, didn't want dinner, and was very lethargic. Gave him Cerenia, fluids, and syringe fed. He is acting better this morning but still lacks appetite. I gave him another Cerenia pill this morning. Ketones are elevated but looks like they are coming down.

I did lots of research and reading last night and it really seems like he has pancreatitis. I called several vets this morning until I found one that could do the SpecFPL test. Sadly, they can't get me in until June 7th. Hopefully, Charlie will start feeling better. I have 4 more Cerenia pills to get us by until then. Any guidance you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear Charlie still isn't feeling well. And the news about your aunt.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

From your last post here: 5/18 Charlie 473 AMPS sounds like the vet was willing to prescribe Cerenia. Do you think she'd prescribe more over the phone without an appointment? I think you need more until the next vet appointment. I'd also try calling that vet clinic every day until they do something about the SnapFPL test. Idexx or any of the labs can do the SpecFPL test, the vet just needs to draw blood and send it in to the lab.

Yes, I could get more Cerenia. She said she would have no problems getting me more. Should I give him one daily until we can get that SpecFPL test?

Since I hadn't heard back from Vet#2 about the SnapFPL. I figured I'd just go somewhere else, that's why I ended up calling the other clinics until I found one that does the SpecFPL (Vet#3).

Do you think I should follow up with Vet#2 and do the SnapFPL and the SpecFPL? Just wait until the 7th for the SpecFPL with Vet#3?

Sorry for all the questions, at this point I feel very lost and not sure what to do.

As long as he's vomiting and off his food, I would give a Cerenia daily. You want to get ahead of nausea. I actually think ondansaetron is better for nausea but if he's vomiting he does need Cerenai. Maybe ask about the SnapFPL test when you are trying to get more Cerenia. If you tell them you suspect pancreatitis, maybe they'll move faster. P'titis is also painful and he should be getting something for that too.

I'll give them a call. I talked to them about Pancreatitis while I was there last so they know that is what we are dealing with. However, she did admit it was something she hadn't dealt with before and didn't know much about it. This new vet I made an appointment with on the 7th, has worked in a couple of hospitals including an emergency clinic so I'm hoping she has some more knowledge on this kind of stuff.

I really wish I could find a vet like you, Wendy! Someone knowledgeable about diabetes and the other crappy things that come along with it.

Called them and they said SnapFPL hasn't come in yet. Maybe the holiday weekend slowed things up. She said she'd keep an eye on it and let me know ASAP. I'm getting 12 more Cerenia pills.

I don't know if it helps much with the pain, but I did give him a couple of kitty CBD treats this morning. He hates the taste of them so I have to force them down. I know that for me, CBD makes me really sleepy. So hopefully he can get some rest or relief.

I haven't been around much.

so very sorry to hear Charlie is still struggling so. I really thought he turned a corner back when he suddenly started having all those green numbers :(

and then back to reds and blacks, I said it back then -- something else going on, some other infection or something (such as pancreatitis) seems like it could be driving up those BGs. Paws crossed you get the help you need for Charlie and he starts to feel better Katy.

I haven't been around much either. Struggling mentally and just busy with life. I really thought we were getting somewhere too! He stayed lower for quite some time then bam, all went downhill. He seems to be good most of the time but it's happened 3 or 4 times now where he doesn't eat and vomits. Something else has to be going on. I am hoping to get some answers later this week and I'll probably post on here again then.

Thanks for always being sweet!

That was a lovely stretch of blues a couple days ago! Unfortunately his body has gotten used to higher numbers, hence bounce.

I hope you get an answer on the vomits soon. Maybe track what food he's eating just before he vomits. Food allergy?

I KNOW! The blues on Sunday were marvelous, I wish they would last longer. I feel like the bouncing is neverending.

Diet hasn't changed, so I don't think it could be a food allergy. I really think it's pancreatitis, unfortunately. I've read about how the pain can cause higher BG numbers. That could be why he's never been regulated. Vet appointment is Friday so hopefully we'll get some answers soon.

He's back to eating and acting just fine. The sick bouts seem to last a couple of days. Once he gets fluids and Cerenia he gets better. It comes in waves. I've wondered if something is causing these flares but haven't noticed any correlation yet.
