What am I - narcoleptic? I fell asleep last night before her nadir. I guess I assumed that because she was bouncing and because her +3 was 257, well, I guess I assumed she wouldn't drop below 100... Apparently I was wrong, because I woke up around +6 and was shocked to see a BG of 98. Her nadir is usually before +6 - more like between +4 to +5, +5.5 or so. So, in theory, she very like was already on her way up when she got that 98... Nice.

Looks like she's bouncing again from that now - I prefer to think of it as her wanting me to go to work on time and not have to worry incessantly about her dropping too low.

She ate a good breakfast, even with that horrible AMPS. Over 2 Tbsp FF - edging up on 3, if you ask me. That's a lot for Kasha, especially since that's only her first breakfast, I'll open another can before I leave and ply her with that.

Re: 5/28 Kasha AMPS 569

Nice green last night, Kasha. I hope you enjoy your day, and have a quick bounce.

I really hope this wasn't a fur shot, but I smelled Lantus on my hand again after the shot. I'm not sure how I could have given a fur shot - I parted her fur and I saw the needle go into the skin. But that's what I thought the other morning too, so who knows. Theoretically, I could have gotten a drop on me when I was measuring out the insulin (I squirt a tiny bit out to get the right measure). Some did drop onto the syringe itself, but I didn't think I had my hand on it. We'll see. I'm just stating this for the record.

Appetite was so-so. I'm going to try part 2 of dinner now. I fed a little early because I was starving and made (ok, heated up in the microwave) some meatballs (turkey) and Kasha was all over me. I thought it was cruel not to feed her and Blue at that point. She ate approx 2 Tbsp, thanks to chicken dust at the end. Funny - that used to be my end goal. Now I don't think that's enough.

aw hopefully not a furshot - will you be getting a couple of checks in this evening?
just in case.

gotta love that chicken dust!

hope you have a great long weekend!

Hi Kris,
If you are afraid that you keep giving fur shots, one thing you could do is get longer needles. "Harpoons", as pat calls them! Even after giving Latte shots of other medicines for years, I began to wonder...so I switched. I have a lot more confidence that the insulin is going in.

Hope the big swings get under control soon.

Well, Kasha had her 3rd meal (I feel like Taco Bell at this point). Her +2 was 309, and +3 was 239 so she's dropping and hopefully that means NOT a fur shot.

Just got the call from her Internal Medicine vet: All of her tests came back looking pretty good (no pancreatitis, it seems):
Cobalamin > 1000 ("Perfect" she said)
Folate 14.4 (normal 10 - 20)
PLI 3.1 (high normal - normal range up to 3.5. She said in these illnesses, the PLI can increase and then slowly drop down, so it could have been higher
before and be dropping now. If it were higher before, that might explain her poor appetite which has been improving).
TLI 54.8 (normal range 12 - 80)

On a non-cat topic, in case I haven't had a tough enough week, BF has had it with me. I just don't have the energy to deal with this too. The problem is, my cats (and horse) come first. I think I forgot that for a while... And now it's going over like a lead balloon. I just feel so tired. The people I can count on are dwindling and I'm seeing sides of people I'd rather not see.

Thanks, Carolyn. I was worried if I got longer needles I'd stick into muscle and hurt her - is that not an issue? I mean, I guess I've used the SQ needles which really ARE harpoons, if you ask me. Problem is, not only does she have very long hair (and she was clipped 2 mos ago and it's long again - she has some hairs that grow 4 inches or more long when she's not clipped) but she has incredibly THICK hair. It's hard to even see her skin when you part the fur (and those tiny needles... you can' t really even feel the resistance when they go in).

Mostly, I think I get the shots in, but ever since her fur started growing back, I don't have the confidence. I have to get new syringes soon - I'll see about trying the longer needles. Thanks for the suggestion.

But right now, with just her undercoat and a shaggy mane, she looks so absolutely adorable, it's not funny. I didn't know if she could rock the lion look, but she was getting so many mats I couldn't keep up and she got a rough and tumble clipping. So cute. My tiny lion girl.

Hi Krys, I use the 1/2" needle, and I rarely get a fur shot. It might be helpful to try a longer needle. Maggie has thick hair, and she rarely flinches when I insert the needle, only when she's partly asleep!

Sometimes there's still a drop of Lantus on the needle or syringe from when you expel insulin to titrate the dose. I frequently will smell Lantus on Gabby and it's from the drop on the needle. The best way to know is what the numbers tell you and Kasha's are coming down. No fur shot!

It's great to hear the vet report was good.

Sorry about the BF. A lot of people don't understand when you put your furry companions first. You will find out who your true friends are and who is empathic. I am incredibly grateful for the friends who will rearrange plans to make sure that I can be home to shoot and/or monitor. The thing that I have found is that there is an unbelievable bond between the members here. A few people have been in Chicago and we've made plans and it's like meeting up with old friends. There are always people here who really do understand. It is very much a community.

Krys (i just realized ive been spelling your name wrong...sorry),
You give the shots the same as you would with the current one's and subq's. You will be fine.

If you needed a script for your needles, you will probably need a new one specifying longer...just as a heads up. I use relion and the local sam's club didnt carry them but were able to order quickly.

With the long hair, I am sure you will feel better switching.

If it makes Kasha feel better you can tell her Latte had her butt shaved recently and probably will continue for the rest of her life. hehehe

It's funny - I thought I needed a script for the needles and so did the vet. Costco had no problem taking the prescription, so when I decided to switch to Relion because Costco didn't have the half unit markings, I got another prescription. So, I went to WalMart for the needles and the pharmacy person told me I didn't need the prescription and handed it back to me.

I still find it odd that you can buy a syringe without a prescription.
