Eugene got his pill into him this morning, so far so good with that. Going to get the liquid tapozole too for back up, when he won't take the pill. Just the other day I was thinking how easy our routine is, test, hoot, feed. Looks like it's going to get a little more involved.
Have a great holiday weekend, I'm hoping to fill the motel and serve lots of drinks and fuds. My vet needs the money, lol.

hope you have some great activity at the motel to pay the vet bill, sandy.
smooches for mr boris! :)

Sandy, I got your FB response through e-mail, but I can't log on to FB from work to continue the thread. Your observation about Boris' vision - is that a recent development? I'm concerned about Boris' BP - please ask Jojo what she thinks. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Conten ... C=0&A=1216: In one study, 87% of cats with untreated hyperthyroidism had systemic hypertension. ... When hypertension is identified, a search for the underlying cause is indicated. It may be that controlling the underlying disease totally reverses the hypertension (especially true for hyperthyroid cats). If his BP is high, and *if* his vision is affected, you don't want to wait to start tapazole, so I'm glad Eugene got the pill in this morning. I wish your vet could get his BP measured - can he call around and see if there are other vets close by who may be able to do that? It's non-invasive, just takes a few minutes to measure.

Have you tried soft treats for pilling? We use Whiska Lickins (I think it's chicken and cheese flavour?) and press Meowzi's pills into the treat, mold treat around pill to cover. And she eats it. (We have to remind her not to chew, just swallow, and she does exactly that).

Thanks for responding to me here Choy fong, I might have mentioned it somewhere, not sure, Boris has the start of cataracts. Yes the soft treat is great for pilling it always worked for mew but can you believe that is the one thing he won't eat.
There is one vet with bp testing equipment but last time I saw her she gave me some song and dance about it not working. I can't count on her for anything she is a complete wack job and now she knows I'm seeing Dr.Flemming she for sure would not help either one of us.
 this one of the few times I wished we lived in a city.
Do you have any idea how long it takes before the tap takes affect? I want to try to watch him for any changes.
He knows something is up, (smart boy) he slept in my bed for awhile last night, he hasn't done that in a very long time.

hmmm, just talked to the gal at the vets, they do have bp testing but feel it's not accurate enough. Choy, should I have them test him next time we are there? I was going to try to have them come here for blood draw in a couple of weeks but if he needs that i will take him in.

i don't know. ask jojo what she thinks?

is it a doppler, or one of those oscillometric units? if it's the doppler, it's accurate if used correctly.

you could ask if the gal is comfortable with bringing it over to your house - if the vet lets her - when she comes over for the blood draw. the vet may may be afraid of damaging it though if they take it around. but the doppler is very portable.

(that's what meowzi actually asked for, lol. she told an animal communicator that she didn't want to go in for bp checks anymore, but she wouldn't fight us if we did it at home. we told her we didn't have a doppler, she told the AC that the vet could drive over, but stay in his car, hand us the doppler, and we could measure her ourselves.  )

Just stopping in to check on you and Boris. Hope you can figure out some way to check his BP. Glad he slept in your bed, extra snuggles.

When I asked for Spike to get a bp check I dont think the vet tech really knew what she was doing. It never got an accurate number for as many times as she did it. He did get a nice little shaved spot on the underside of his tail though. Hope Boris takes his meds with no problems. I used to squish Princess pill in american cheese. Kinda like a small cheese ball.

Hi Sandy

I got your PM. Do you happen to have digital x-rays? If his heart issue is from the hyperthyroidism, controlling that disease will help the heart tremendously. If he has an underlying heart issue, the hyperthyroidism is putting way too much stress on his heart too. Does he eat a regular commercial diet or do you make his food? Is he obese?

In the meantime, since the heart disease is unknown, you want to keep an eye on his breathing at home. While he's lying around at rest you dont' want to see anything above 30-35 breaths per minute. You're on the lookout for "exercise intolerance" (panting, avoidance of jumping or prolonged activity), rapid breathing, "funny" breathing (nostril flaring, abdominal breathing, shallow breathing) and sudden changes in appetite.

No steroids, no fluids (IV or SQ), no stress if you can help it, till this is all figured out.
