Good morning everyone.
I cannot believe this is the 3rd day in a row that it is sunny and and warm here in the northeast.
I hope everyone has a storm free day. :-D

Putty is a little annoyed with me for not opening a condo .....he says he has not met any of the new kitty's in LL.
I will open a one for him a little later today.

There are so many names I don't know. Even kitties going OTJ. I feel bad. But also without a daily condo of our own its hard to get to know them.

Really blah weather here. My newly planted plants are loving it though. I couldn't ask for better weather for them to get settled. The blue poppies are probably in heaven.

Taking my heart dog to the vet today. Its an hour away and she hates the car. I debated going to another closer vet, but I will go to her amazing old vet this one last time. She has officially passed the 1 year mark from her diagnosis of severe heart disease and heart failure. Her coughing is more frequent though, so we may get xrays today.

I have a step class at the Y tonight too. I'm starting to lose weight which feels good. But the way my neck is positioned to see the instructor caused a brutal migraine last time. This time I'm going to take a muscle relaxant before the class. I may have to leave if it makes me dizzy. But I love this class so much I want to keep going. I made an appointment with the neck expert to continue therapy also.

Hey Guys,
We have sun too, but severe thunderstorms are expected to roll in this afternoon. Gotta get down to the cellar and bail before the next shoe dropping makes it lots worse again (it was a very little bit better yesterday).

Karrie, good luck with your pup and the vet. I hope that the trip to the vet is stress free and that you will get a good report.

Ella

Ella will you be able to fix the cellar to prevent it from happening again? Or is this something that you will always be dealing with?

I would love some help with ants in the house and how to kill them with cats all over? When Maverick was here I was able to put the drops on the counter on tinfoil as Maverick wasn't able to jump. Victoria is EVERYWHERE. Borax is toxic to cats so I have this outside in very thin tubes that the ants will have to climb in. But when I track them inside, they go under the trim at the front door and disappear. They aren't coming in from outside that I can see outside the door. I'm scared that no matter how I make it that Victoria and Henry can't get it that they will find a way. So I haven't put any indoors. They are in the recroom also which I could block off but I can't depend on DH remembering to keep the door closed. He plays his video games in there. Stupid Black Ops - online Xbox game.

Sienne thats a great idea. I'll get there early and try a different spot. I love simple solutions ;) My purpose in life is to make the simplest problems complicated. See ant problem above ;)

Kerrie....good luck at the vet. I hope you get a spot in the front of the step class. You don't want to do something that is supposed to make you feel good make you feel bad. :?

Ella....I am so sorry you have had such a terrible time with rain and a flooded basement.

This has been a very crazy time of year for us. My DD graduates high school a week from Sunday. Her last varsity tennis match is today...I have loved watching her play.

We've have been attending a lot of senior nights, awards nights, sports night etc,...keeping us all very busy.
A bittersweet time for our family but a new beginning for my daughter. We have a big graduation party planned for June 18 which will also keep me very busy in the next couple of weeks.

The outside of our house is being painted which is not making Putty or my DD very happy. The painters come very early in the morning and bang the ladders against the house which keeps both of them from sleeping too late.

Morning, everybody!! Karrie, you are cracking me up today!! I too am afflicted with the ability to come up with amazing, highly complicated solutions to problems that only need the most minor of fixes. So nice to know I have a kindred spirit!! Congrats on the weight loss. I am still needing motivation to get off my butt and move, but am least doing well with eating and am definitely noticing the clothes are fitting looser!! Fingers and paws crossed for a good vet visit today!!

Ella, I hope the cellar bailing goes okay! Wish I could help!!

I know what everybody means about the new folks... hoping I get a chance to set aside some time this week to say hello to new folks! Right now, I barely even have a chance to say hello to our new interns at tbp!! I figure catching up on the boards will be a good break from packing this weekend! I'm just getting so excited... Willie will just have so much more space to roam, both inside and out. I think it will really do him wonders. My first two years of law school, he, Miss Belle and I lived in a tiny one room studio.

It's sunny here today as well... fingers and paws crossed that everybody gets a day free of rain...unless you really need it, in which case, I'm sure Ella will happily send you hers!!

I found a new ant spray called EcoSmart at the local Ace hardware. Safe for children and pets. The active ingredients are rosemary and cinnamon essential oils. Smells really good too, but strong. i'd still keep them off it until it is dry. So far I've had no new incursions where I've sprayed.

there are just a lot of people posting on the lantus board! not sure how it's been in the past, but i try to hit 3 or 4 condos every time i post a new number and i'm still not getting to everyone. you could stay all day on here and not get anything else done!

my folks had a chronic problem with tiny ants & my mom used to sprinkle cinnamon around. i know she tried bay leaves too, but since i now have a giant jar of bay leaves, i'm going to guess they didn't work. we had a bunch pop up after our remodel and my husband bought Terro Liquid Ant Balls - i don't know why it's called balls because it's a honey-like liquid. you can put the little containers inside of cupboards so the cats don't get it. the ants are attracted to it and then were gone within a couple of days. we still have the little containers out and our cats haven't bothered them.

miriam, is she your youngest/only? life gets a lot more simple after the kids leave! i adore my kids, but must admit it was zero adjustment to an empty nest. but i loved it when they went off to kindergarten too. the only time i ever got teary was when my oldest went to college. after we dropped her off i found myself a little weepy, but honestly it was because it symbolized me getting older. it wasn't about her being gone. besides, my kids seem to be little boomerang children and they keep showing back up again, even if it's just for the weekend. i almost always have someone here. our youngest is home for the summer now after her first year at college.

my mother-in-law is spending the night tonight so i need to shovel out a guest room that i exploded into a couple of weeks ago. have a great day, everyone!

shoot - i should've thought of that. we've used diatomaceous earth and it's awesome! works on fleas, ants and any insect that has a waxy outer coating. it's got sharp edges and it cuts through the waxy coating, then they dehydrate. we used to get it at a garden store - it's not expensive. outside when we were treating for carpenter ants, i would put it in a big strainer (it's like flour) and then just tap it to have it sift through the strainer to the ground along the perimeter of the house.

never thought of using it inside, but i'm sure you could. i even found it in the pet store a while ago and put it on the cats. it's more expensive there, though.

I use Terro Shaker Bag outside. And Terro also makes the self contained baits. If I recall they use Borax, and claim the amount is small enough to not poison a cat or dog. http://terro.com/

Is Terro Liquid Ant Bait safe to use around pets and children?

Terro can be used safely around pets and children. The inert ingredients are sweet food-based products similar to pancake syrup. The active ingredient is Borax. Borax is a natural mineral that is found in many consumer products and has been used safely by homeowners for years.

I have also used MaxForce Gel which has fipronel(sp), those have to be out of the pet and children's way.

We used to use Grant sticks (used to because we don't have an ant problem at our new house). I think we got them at Ace, Home Depot or Lowes. They are sticks with a round container with a small hole. They contain ant pheromones...you put hot water in them and it activates the pheromones...they go to it and I believe there is also a toxin to ants in them and then ants are gone. The hole is way too small for the cats to get anything out of it.

Miriam...congratulations!! It sounds like your daughter has alot of wonderful accomplishments. I'm sure it must be a very difficult time in the midst of a very, very happy time. Hugs just because....

Jill and Julie, wow -- thanks for the idea of using diatomatious earth (oops, spelling isn't right) for ant control. We have a pool that has a DE filter so we have tons of the stuff. I never knew it works on ants. My DH and I will try sprinkling a little around the places that the ants are coming in and I'll let y'all know how it works. The amazing things you learn on FDMB!

Hope everyone is having a great night. I haven't been able to post much but I love reading the Loose Lips posts and catching up with what everyone is doing.

The pool stuff isn't quite the right kind (size). The garden center should have it.

Thanks for the suggestions. These ants are driving me absolutely batty. I've tried looking them up and they don't seem to be the carpenter variety but they are so tiny, with my glasses on I can barely focus on them they move so fast. So the DE - I have to look up how this work. Would they have to burrow in it to have it work? Or just walk over it? I don't think these ants will move over a chalk line. I worry they would find another way into the house. And I don't see them coming in from outside anywhere. I wonder if the nest is somewhere in my house. nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile

Lightly coat a thin layer of Diatomaceous Earth in areas where these pests are found or may hide, such as cracks and crevices, behind or beneath stoves, refrigerators, cabinets, garbage cans and in and around sewer pipes and drains, window frames and in attics, basements and crawlspaces.

For ants: Simply sprinkle DE in, on, and around the ant hills to make sure they have to walk through it.

Another thing to do is where you do see them...

Ants lay a scent trail to and from their food and water sources. Washing with distilled white vinegar can break the trail. If you decide to use DE, do not wash the area first. Kills the ones you see.

If you decide to use the Terro self-contained bait stations...again do not clean/wash the area. Ants take the bait back to the nest and kill the nest.
