Yesterday's Condo

Today is the third anniversary of Gabby being OTJ – ON the juice! In many ways and, like many of the kitties here, it is nothing short of a miracle that Gabby survived the first days of her diagnosis.

Shortly before Gabby was diagnosed, Gizmo joined the family. If you think he is irrepressible now, Gizmo as a 4 month old was even more energized. It was hard to tell how much of Gabby’s behavior was due to Gizmo being, well, Gizmo. In retrospect, her hiding was probably due to the FD and not Gizmo being a pest. I began to notice an acetone/alcohol smell on her breath over Memorial Day.

That Tuesday, we were at the vet’s office bright and early. Gabby’s BG was elevated, she was lethargic, throwing ketones, dehydrated – in other words, a very sick kitty. My vet told me she had DKA, they wanted to stabilize her in the office and then I would need to transport her to a local 24 hour ER/ICU. Both my vet and the vet at the ER gently mentioned that not all cats survive DKA.

I was calling the ER every 6 hours for reports on Gabby’s labs. Overnight, her electrolytes had stabilized and were beginning to return to normal values. In the meantime, they did a thorough work-up and further diagnosed pancreatitis and hepatic lipidosis. This kitty is a fighter and was back home after 3 days at the hospital.

I was hugely relieved to have Gabby back home even if I was still shell shocked. (Gizmo was overjoyed to have her back. He was literally jumping up and down and totally ignored the vetty smell. He missed Gabby!!) I belatedly realized that because I can speak medicalese, no one at the hospital bothered to teach me how to give a shot. (Of course, no one even mentioned home testing.) I learned to give a shot by watching videos on YouTube.

To add insult to injury, on the visit back to the hospital a few weeks later where the internal medicine vet wanted to do a curve, Gabby contracted ringworm. I now had both cats confined to my bedroom so I could contain the problem. While trying to maintain peace and in between having to bathe both cats in sulfur lime solution and sanitize my condo from top to bottom on a weekly basis, I stumbled on to FDMB about 2 months after Gabby’s diagnosis. The rest, as they say is history.

Gabby has the honor of having taught many kitties here how to cliff dive. She is a diva who enjoys keeping me on my toes. The people here who taught me how to manage those numbers, helped to keep Gabby safe when I was making newbie blunders. The almost instantaneous response to a question, the way people rallied those first several times when I saw low green numbers and continue to rally when I post some absurdly low number, the encouragement and support that are consistently provided continue to leave me in a state of awe. And, the generosity of spirit that pervades LL has kept me here to pay it forward. Thank you all for making LL the community that it is.

Happy Annifursary Gabby & Sienne!!

Thank you for sharing your story. I know I take for granted that you are here and have never stopped to think about HOW you got here. I have, admittedly so, just known that you are a rock I can count on. What a wild ride emotionally for all of you. Congratulations on 3 years! That is definitely reason to celebrate. You are the glue that is FDMB and I don't tell you how much I appreciate all you have done for us. Have a great great day!

HAPPY 3RD ANNIVERSARY SIENNE AND GABBY!!!

I agree with Melissa...you are the person that we can always count on to give good sound advice and to calm us down when we are in a state of panic over low numbers, high numbers, and anything in between. Thank you for sharing your story. You and Gabby sure went through alot before you found FDMB. Thanks to you and FDMB, Gabby is doing so well.

Have a wonderful day, you two! I thank you and I know all of LL thanks you from the bottom of our hearts!!

HAPPY ANNIFURSARY GABBY!!!!

I have to say you guys have quite the story .. I can't imagine having to deal with a 4 month old rambunctious kitten, a newly diagnosed diabetic cat AND ringworm!! I have to give my thanks to you Sienne as I think all of us do .. And I hope all of us here know that you don't have to be here, to help us and to give us advice, but yet you choose to do so .. and that makes it all that much more special :YMHUG:

Re: 5/26 Gabby AMPS~233 Anniversary #3

Sienne, I had no idea Gabby had health issues so severe, at the start of this dance. I'm so glad she recovered, to be the wonderful girl, she is.

I know that you didn't write this post to receive accolades, but one can't write to you, without expressing gratitude for your sharing of your knowledge, and kind and gentle manner, and not embarrassing people in public when we do dumb things.

Naturally, like everyone else here, I would love to see Gabby get off the juice, but since she and you are here.

Happy Annifursary Gabby & Sienne

I also didn't know the full story of Gabby and when Gizmo came along! Wow, Gabby, you sure have been thru a lot and are so lucky to have Sienne as your Bean! Did Gabby have some remissions along the way? I will check out her ss. I couldn't agree more with all the kind things said about you. Thank you for all the help and guidance you have given Maggie and me. I always look forward to Gabby and Gizmo's daily routines. You could write a little kids' book on them, well, for us adults, too! :-D

HAPPY ANNIFURSARY GABBY AND SIENNE

Sienne, Gabby has come so far in the 3 years. I can't imagine having a cat with so many conditions, and also having a kitten demanding attention at the same time. How tiring! But she is looking really good now and worth all your effort. May that be it for the drama!

And I echo the gratitude of others for helping out us newbies. Just last night I had a "I can shoot, Sienne said it's OK" moment. Having your expertise around goes a long way to calming the nerves. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this with us....I always enjoy looking at Gabby's profile and the gorgeous pictures of her, George, and the ever handsome Gizmo.

While I know you believe the day you came to FDMB was a godsend for you and Gabby, it was also one for all of us. You have given back thousandsfold and helped more newbies and oldbies than you will
ever know. So we celebrate Gabby's health today and also that you are here with us.
