I started a new bottle of Lantus last night and am pretty well convinced that Dusty's bout of bad numbers was caused by the old insulin not being effective. Here's how last night went:
PMPS: 353, +2 216, +4 155, +6 126, +8 112
At that point I confess I didn't set for a +9 or +10 to see if she was still going lower. AND I woke up (at basically her +11.5) to sounds of her eating up the last of the food left over from yesterday's meal. So I just grabbed a quick early test, before the food numbers set in, and she's at 293. This is, I'd imagine, with her depot pretty depleted, if the insulin has slowly been losing effectiveness for the last week.

My question: I raised her from 2.25 to 2.75 over the last week and a half because her numbers were bad. But if her numbers were bad because of the bad insulin, would it make sense to start her this morning back at 2.25 and see if she responds well to that amount? I'd prefer to shoot the lower amount and to raise it as needed, but I also don't want to lose ground and see her with high numbers again, after a week and a half of stinky pinks.

Thanks!

Re: 5/26, Dusty, DOSE QUESTION

Hi Michelle

This looks to me like a classic cycle of bounce clearing. I think the reduction to 2.25u failed and her numbers started to go back up. It's possible it was the vial but it can be difficult to tell.

I'd leave her where she is and see what she does. You don't want to take her down in case it wasn't the vial....then you will lose time taking her back up. If it's the vial, she'll tell you soon enough.

Did the vial have any floaties or particles or look cloudy? If it was the same vial you started in January, it should be fine as long as it was handled properly.

Re: 5/26, Dusty, DOSE QUESTION

OK. She'll get the 2.75 and we'll go from there. Thanks, Marje!

The vial looked and smelled fine, so it could still be working at full strength. I think I got overly excited about her good numbers last night. :) Ah well, back to the dance!

I hope your Sunday is going well and sweet Gracie enjoys her lizard watching!

Re: 5/26, Dusty, DOSE QUESTION

I agree with Marje. I'd keep the dose where it is and reduce only if Dusty tells you it's too much insulin.

Re: 5/26, Dusty, AMPS 313

Good grief Dusty!

All that excitement....and this? :-D

I was just going to come back on, Michelle, and tell you she could still be dropping at AMPS......too late ;-)

Have a super day. I'm not sue if the lizard watching results in more frustration or fun

Re: 5/26, Dusty, AMPS 313, +2 249

Ha! Yes, I was a bit dismayed to see her so high this morning. I'm hoping it's a mini-bounce from the low blues of last night and she comes down nicely during the day. For now, though, it's snoozeville in the house. That should last another 20 minutes or so until I bring out The Greatest Enemy, aka the vacuum cleaner.

Re: 5/26, Dusty, AMPS 313, +2 249, +4 114

Aaaaaand down we slide. I think I'll test at her +5 to make sure she's not too low. I have a meeting at her +8 and then an evening out after that, so I'm hoping that she settles into some lovely high green and then just hangs out there for the day. We can go deep sea diving starting tomorrow. :-D

Thanks for the visit, Lisa and Josie! And yes, the vacuum is the Great Enemy in this house. Dusty tries to put a brave face on it but the moment it looks like it's headed in her direction, she hightails it out of the room. I always look at those videos of cats riding on Roombas and am amazed at how nonchalant the cats are about the loud, shaking machine they're riding on.

Re: 5/26, Dusty, AMPS 313, +2 249, +4 114, +5 89, +6 100, +7

Well that nice time in the blues and greens didn't last long.

I'm thinking, too, that Dusty is probably constipated. Her stomach is pretty tight and I've only seen a small bit of poo from her in the last 3 days. She got miralax yesterday and today, so I'm hoping she'll work things out soon. If not, there might be a fast trip to the vet tomorrow. (Oh. ****. Well, tomorrow is Memorial Day. So super duper hoping for poo tonight since the vet isn't open tomorrow.)

If you were just looking at the AMPS and the PMPS, you'd think that Dusty had a high day. Alas, just a lot of bouncing, it seems! Hopefully her liver will calm down a bit and she'll come down from the stratosphere soon.
