I would say this is fairly typical of Chuck when he's off insulin. He stays relatively consistent, but high. I know he's feeling a little punk based on how he's acting, just hope he can hold out another 24 hours until we start the PZ.

The vet said to start with a tenth of a unit per pound of body weight -- Chuck weighs about 7 pounds, so we're going a smidge under a unit to start with. I might even go a bit lower than that, and try for 1/2 unit to start. I'll be testing every couple of hours for the first two days. Ideally, I'd like to see him below 200 most of the day, but will be happy with under 300...

I tend to be conservative and figure you can always increase if the dose proves too low but can't get it out once shot. PZI doesn't have that 5-7 day period when you hold the dose while the shed fills. You can raise the dose after 3 cycles if you see consistently high numbers.

I like the .5 and monitoring carefully.

Hi Susan -

I assume you're trying to drain Chuck's shed - that's why you're waiting, right? I think I would go ahead and shoot. First, if he's over 400, and second, ProZinc is kinda like R - in & out in a short time. I wouldn't think there would be an issue as the Lantus has cleared the body... which is how I interpret that 456.

Hoping you get good results on the change! Be sure to check for ketones too.

Lu-Ann, I'd love to start him now, but the vet doesn't want me to shoot and leave him. I'm working today until 5 p.m. (Central) and then we're headed to the lake for a camping weekend. Not sure I want to shoot him tonight and then stay up all night testing, which is why I'm planning to start Sunday morning. An early shot (around 5:30 a.m.) and then testing every couple of hours to see how he handles the new insulin. Same plan for Monday morning. Hoping I don't have to stay up all night Sunday night, but will be able to set alarms if necessary (just seems wrong to stay up all night when I'm on "vacation" <smile!>)...

Yeah on ketones being negative with those tests last week. :RAHCAT

While Chuck is in those higher numbers, getting a ketone urine test daily would be a good idea. Ketones can appear and creep up quickly so we'd rather have you testing for ketones more often right now.

What deb said!
I asked because any time insulin is reduced a lot or withheld for a couple cycles, keeping an eye out for ketones is a good idea.
