Today was a really rough day. I got home from work last night at 1:30 which meant that I didn't get to bed until around 3:30. I had to be back at work at 11 and actually haven't had a day off in over a week and don't have day off until Tuesday to even do a curve. That's besides the point. The point is that I set my alarm for 6:00 am to give him his shot and in my exhaustion I made a huge mistake, I shot without testing first. I will NEVER EVER do this again. When I was leaving for work I tested him and he tested a 39!!! I had to leave for work so I gave him high carb treats and a high carb wet can. Needless to say it was a horrible nerve-wracking day at work. I just got home and tested him again and he was at 116. Obviously I have not given him a PM shot. I feel like I am struggling a lot with getting his doses and levels under control because I have not been able to do a curve yet. I am going to continue testing over the next couple of hours. This morning I gave him 1.5 units and OBVIOUSLY that is still wayyyyy too much. Should I go ahead and give 1 unit the next time I shoot once his BG levels are better? Thank you for reading all of this, I'm sorry it's so long I am just trying to be thorough in my explanations.

Re: 5/21 Phoenix AM +4 39 PMPS 116 HELP!

I would not shoot tonight. Can you get some tests tonight though? I'd like to see what happens tonight before thinking too much about a dose for tomorrow. I'm looking to see how long it takes before he starts going up, and how high he goes.

You're right, 1.5 is now too much. Looks like the food change has done a lot of good for Phoenix!

Re: 5/21 Phoenix AM +4 39 PMPS 116 HELP!

Thanks for the quick response Libby. Yes I can test all night tonight. I'm glad the food change has had positive influence now if only I can get his doses right!!!

Re: 5/21 Phoenix AM +4 39 PMPS 116 HELP!

For a lot of cats, the diet change causes an unexpected drop. The good news is that you tested before you walked out the door and intervened the way you needed to! So, good job!! We'll help you get the dose sorted out.

Re: 5/21 Phoenix PMPS 116 +1 114 +2 104

I'd get a +3. You're seeing a reasonable drop at +2 which could mean that numbers are coming down.

Re: 5/21 Phoenix PMPS 116 +1 114 +2 104 +3 67

Sorry. My bad.

When you don't give a dose of insulin, there isn't a "pre-shot" number. You need to put PMBG (or AMBG) in your subject line (not AM/PMPS). That way, people like me who didn't open your SS, aren't quite as confused!

What's bringing down Phoenix's numbers is food in combination with a working pancreas. The way the pancreas works is that when your cat eats, the body's normal response is to signal the pancreas to release insulin to bring down the BG levels that food causes to increase. As a result, a few hours after eating, BG levels naturally come down when the pancreas is working the way it should.
