Oh Merlin...too high. I couldn't help myself and gave him 1.2u instead of the 1u.

+5 - 253

I was really hoping that his BG would have been good at +5 because we are off to the vet to get some blood work done to see if he can be cleared to get his teeth worked on. Hopefully, second time is the charm.

Hi Cindy,

Merlin may be clearing a bounce and you might have a later slide down into a better nadir yet this cycle. Good vetty vines headed your way!!

Re: 5/21 Merlin AMPS 444,+5/253

Merlin is back from the vet. There is good and bad news.

1) Kidney indicators have not improved but have not changed either (so he thought that was kind of good news).
2) Merlin gained 9 oz since four weeks ago (good news).
3) When the vet tech was drawing blood, the vet went to visit Merlin to check him over and he thought he was looking pretty good. His coat was looking good, he was friendly, alert, talkative and he gained weight (good news).
4) The vet said even though he would have liked to have seen better lab results, he said that he would go ahead with the dental since Merlin seems to be stable at this time. He said that there could be complications so he would like to have Merlin checked into the hospital the night before (next Tuesday pm) so they can give him IV fluids all through the night. They plan to do the dental first thing Wednesday morning and will keep him on IV fluids for the rest of the day. Then I will pick him up late Wednesday afternoon.
5) He also suggested Azodyl. It helps reduce the nitrogen build up and toxins that the kidneys are unable to filter or eliminate. Supposedly it could slow the progress of CKD. I checked on Tanya's website and they had quite a bit of information on it. She has heard from users that it was beneficial to some cats. I am assuming that is ok for diabetic cats but thought I would post it on the general health site to see if anyone has used it. The bad thing is that it comes in a small capsule and you need to give the cat 2-3 capsules per day (depending upon the weight) and you can't open or crush the capsule because it needs to be absorbed in the intestines rather than the stomach. So will have to find a way for the cat to swallow the capsule.

Oh by the way, he didn't have any problem not running a fructosamine test. He understood my reason and was fine with the decision. He is getting used to reading the spreadsheet now and I can tell that he has studied it too...which is great.

Another good thing...I was a little afraid of what the bill might be and he told me that he would not charge me for the hospital stay and the fluids...only for the dental on the price that we agreed. The office is also giving me $75 off the total dental bill. The vet is planning to remove the cyst that is on Merlin's front leg with no charge too.

So, overall, I am glad that we can now move forward and we have a plan. I hate not trying things and just coasting.

Now for tonight PMPS...not good news. Couldn't help myself again and gave him 1.2u. I know I probably should have given 1u and will in the am if he should get another 400+ number.

I'm glad the vet visit went well, Cindi. I hope you can get more info on the CKD meds by posting on health. I think there are several LL kitties that are also CKD kitties, so there should be a few that are familiar with that med. It really sounds like the vet is willing to take the time and study Merlin's situation and work with you. I hope his numbers slide down for you tonight.

What a nice two hour surf. I predict a bounce tomorrow!

I am thinking that he is not going to go down any lower so I am going to bed.

There he goes again, Cindi. His patterns look so much like Eddie's - flat bounces and then a crash. While there is no predicting, Eddie has certainly flattened out safely on Lantus. I'm with Rachel. I'd get the dental done and give the ProZinc a last chance. If he doesn't stop the spikes and drops, I'd try Lantus.
