Today is the fourth day Jinx has had loose stools since getting off the metrinidazole. He was on FF Classic Chicken originally and then I switched to FF Classic Beef; Merrick's Cowboy Cookout (which got puked up all over the house), and he's been on Wellness Chicken and Wellness Turkey for the past 3 days. I've given him two doses of pysllium and he just had his fourth dose of slippery elm bark. Any food suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: 5/20 Jinx AMPS 459 (AT), loose stools question

Binks has a bad reaction to any beef product...
and Cowboy Cookout provoked pukus for him as well.

He does wonderfully on Wellness, though.

Sorry I don't have any real wisdom to offer, joe

No problem, I appreciate the message. I know I'll figure it out with all the help on here.

Re: 5/20 Jinx AMPS 459 (AT), loose stools question

Recently I used the fortiflora and slippery elm bark for my civvie after 10 days of the flagyl. It seemed to help as it Firmed up those stools in a few days.

Hope you find something that works for Jinx.

Re: 5/20 Jinx AMPS 459 (AT), loose stools question

Thanks, Tena. He was on the Fortiflora for over a week but unfortunately, that didn't work either.

Prior to his diagnosis, he was on IAMs Proactive Health and never had any loose stool issues. I also used to give him a weekly treat of canned tuna fish and he never threw that up either.

Have you discussed long term flagyl with your vet? We had the same issues and that is the only thing that has helped, along with the psyllium.

Re: 5/20 Jinx AMPS 459, +4 396 (AT), loose stools question

I haven't Melissa but I'm definitely not opposed to it. I was just hoping to fix it with herbal remedies/supplements and/or diet.
Just out of curiosity, did you try raw food? Also, do you give the flagyl to Tarragon as needed or daily? Thanks for the message.

Re: 5/20 Jinx AMPS 459, +4 396, +5.5 344 (AT) loose stools

Flagyl/metronidazole is not an "as needed" drug. You need to dose it consistently for minimum of a week. When Gabby was having issues with diarrhea, at one point she was on it for about a month along with FortiFlora.

If you were feeding dry food, it's not surprising that Jinx may have some GI issues until his system adjusts. Something like canned pumpkin may provide the fiber that he was getting with the dry stuff and won't effect his BG levels. (Plain canned pumpkin -- not pumpkin pie filling since it contains sugar.) A raw diet can be good but I would wait until the GI issues were a bit more stable. It's usually advisable to transition over to raw food since you can run into the same problems with any food change.

Re: 5/20 Jinx AMPS 459, +4 396, +5.5 344 (AT) loose stools

Sienne - We do use flagyl "as needed". At the first sign of a loose stool, we give one flagyl per day until it is gone. One pill usually clears it up for a week or two. We originally were on flagyl for a month at a time for 3 months in a row but the diarrhea came back within a couple of days of stopping the flagyl each time. We do give the psyllium daily at two pills per can of food as well. Our vet has a few dogs and cats with IBD who use flagyl the way we do. I'm not sure why it works the way it does but it has worked well for us and has eliminated the explosive diarrhea Tarragon was experiencing. I am just happy that we found something that works.

We did try raw but Tarragon is very picky and wouldn't eat it. He only eats FF classic chicken.

Melissa and Sienne, thanks for the info. He's been on wet food for over a month now so I feel like I'm running out of options if the psyllium and SEB don't kick in soon. I'll keep you all posted.

On a more positive note, I was very happy to see a 344 pre-shot for Jinx. Crossing my fingers that we start seeing some steady improvement.

I hope that some of the other members whose kitty's have this issue can help sort it out.

You've had him checked for parasites right? Just to be positive? That is the only time I've had a kitty that didn't respond to SEB....kitten Tobey had Giardia and needed Albon to kick it.

Nice PMPS....ok Jinx....use that juice.

Hope something works soon for him, Joe.

I actually don't think my vet has so I will call him tomorrow to get that done. Thanks, Marjorie.

So you would have definitely expected the SEB to have taken effect by now? I just gave him his sixth dose or so.
