5/2/24 Mazi AMPS 224 +4 66 +5 76 +6 94 +9 117 PMPS 118 + 3 122

He's a champ and so patient with me.

2 months ago when I would have seen a BG of 66, I would have panicked and ran for the Karo syrup and would have gave him syringe of 2 ml's of syrup. Which a 1/4 of it would have ended up on his face. Poor Mazi, and then I'd have to wash him up. Not to mention the Karo would increased him to the mid 100's.

Today, I'm much more calm and didn't panic. Just gave him a snack and rechecked him. He was still a tad bit low so I just calmly went and grabbed a little bit more food and it boosted him up enough to where he was still in a healthy BG range.

I'm definitely getting better and less anxious when handling low BGs. But if I ever catch him drop to the low 50s or less, ill prolly go straight for the Karo.

I've only experienced one 54 BG about a month ago. So low 50s and less make me anxious..lol

You're doing great Theresa , I could just picture poor Mazi full of Karo all over his face
I was reading this that one of our members posted to another member
Yes, simple sugars like Karo, honey, maple syrup, sugar-water will bring the BG up quicker, but also wear off fairly quickly too so it's good to either mix a simple sugar with food or give a little to start working quickly and then give some high carb food (not too much...you don't want to fill them up or make them throw up).

Food takes a little longer to break down and get into the bloodstream (20-30 mins for canned).

Kibble takes longer than canned food.

Also
68 is the take action number for Alpha Trak meters. Either feed med or high carb food and check again in about 30 minutes
Did I give you this already

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Beef Feast in Gravy 20% High Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Chicken Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Turkey Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Chicken and Beef in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Good idea to mark the cans with magic marker how many carbs

Or any on the food chart. Doesn't have to be Fancy Feast just an example about the med and high carb foods

10% and under is low carb
11% -15 is medium carbs.

16- 24 is high carb.

@Mazi's Mom

I had read an article on Karo a while back that said the same thing..Basically karo, honey, etc will boost the sugar quickly but the effects do not last long. So its always good to follow up with some food.

Its good to use if their unconscious, won't eat, or to buy you time to get to the emergency hospital.

Right now Mazi has Friskis Variety pate that has 3 to 6% carbs, 9 lives that are 3 to 6% carbs, and Froza10 that is 0.5 to 1% carbs. And a bag of emergency temptations incase I need to boost him and he doesn't want his pate, I can always bribe him with some treats.

Plus I've learned that if he turns down his treats it's time to go to the emergency room, because he if he turns down treats and doesn't want to eat, he more than likely has pancreatitis or something else going on. He had a bad episode of Acute Pancreatitis a few years back in 2021. And he might of had a minor episode when he was diagnosed with DKA and DM 2 months ago, but we never did an ultrasound so ill never know, just treated the DKA.

This weekend I have to go to goodwill and pick him up a couple of onesies (sp?) to wear next week for when he has his sensor placed. While I'm out, im going to pick up some cans of medium and high carb pate to put in my hypo kit.

You never know when his blood sugar will get stubborn and his friskies won't boost it enough to a normal level. So instead of going for the Karo, ill try some higher carb foods to boost him before I resort to the Karo. Unless of course his BG is so low and I want to boost him immediately then ill go for the Karo and follow up with a medium and high carb snack.
