all is well today in punkin's world. i think he's finally cleared the New Dose Wonkiness - i've noticed that when his dose increases it takes longer than the 72 hours for him to settle down and begin to respond to the increase and go back down in numbers. this time it was 11 doses. talk about making me learn patience!

clean plate club membership maintained, got anya's plate there too, bath done, now he's busy napping. it's a lotta work!

the daughter vomited last night, but joyfully she made it to the toilet so there was nothing to clean up. i suspect it was more the 5 smoothies and one milk shake than the meds, so she took the percocet again this morning. hopefully this will stay down.

Good morning Julie and Punkin! Punkin was being obstinent this time huh? Looks like he is breaking through, which is great.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. It will take a week or so, but it will get better.

Hope you have a great day!

i finally updated punkin's spreadsheet with data i got from the vet's from the beginning weeks before we were hometesting. not a happy sight.

Re: 5/18 punkin amps 198 +3/194

not a happy sight, but a good reminder of how much progress you've made!!!

I am glad to see Punkin doing well today!! Yay!!!

I am sorry to hear about your daughter! That can't be fun... I hope she feels better soon.

Hi Julie, It's good that the NDW is unwonking. Nice blue numbers so far today. Your poor daughter, but I guess one pays the price for all those smoothies (even though they were necessary to make her mouth feel better!). Maybe she needs some KTSS chicken soup?

nice day for punkin. glad he's taking to the dose adjustment! hopefully he keeps this nice trend.

i used ice chips whenever i had oral surgeries. when we didn't have an ice crusher, that meant my amazing, patient, wonderful mother took a bag of ice and a rubber head mallet and went at it and then tossed the smashed ice in the blender to get it extra fine. essentially shaved ice. they are so fine you can't really suck on them because they dissolve, but they are cold like smoothies so they reduce inflammation and they didn't make my stomach upset. sometimes she mixed in a little gatorade or pedialite with chips. mmmm gatorade snow cone- that's my childhood sick days- now you know i've done this a few time! you have to use a small spoon like grapefruit spoon to feed yourself depending on the swelling but it works!

Oh, your poor daughter, which really translates to poor Julie!!! :-D I hope your daughter isn't as big a baby as mine  At least Punkin looks like he's trying really hard to ease your workload. He's such a good boy!

Glad to see Punkin is keeping himself busy, what with the Clean Plate duties, bathing, and napping. The kitties have such a tough life!

I hope you're daughter is doing better this evening!

talked to the vet this afternoon - he looked up the links i sent him on acro and on bartonella's. he said he didn't know about acro - and he asked his youngest partner, who's only been out of vet school for 3 years - she hadn't heard of it either.

great example of how vets have to cover a lot of info on many animals and aren't in-depth. this practice has always been a large animal practice.

he's going to draw blood on monday and send it to the lab for the wednesday testing. He said "well punkin is a big guy and that could explain some things." true.

he recommended we wait on the Bartonella test because punkin just finished anti-biotics and that could cause a false negative on the test.

Why does your vet think bartonella might be a factor? Just curious, because we treated Trixie for bartonella when we first got her...she was about 3 years old at the time - about 6 years ago. She was on zithtromax for a month. She had no symptoms...we just had her tested for all sorts of things since she had been abandoned outside for a good month or so before she showed up on our back porch. Bartonella was the only thing that came up positive...

i suggested the bartonella - when i took punkin to the new vet for a second opinion she mentioned it. I looked it up and he has all the risk factors - one of the symptoms is chronic gingivitis. it's carried by fleas and in our region (up and down the pacific coast) 45% of cats have it.

interesting that Trixie had it. i'd never heard of it before, but it sounds like it's more widespread by region than you would think.

For a while there, I thought I got it from her myself. When she first entered the pack here, there was a huge cat fight - I had to reach in and pull one of my civvies out, and she bit me. (I readily admit that I was just bit afraid of her after that fight!). After that, I started having terrible problems with mouth ulcers...but now, I think that situation is unrelated.

I do think it's fairly common, since it is a fleaborne illness.

yes, i'll get him checked for IAA at the same time, lisa.

interesting about the bite & mouth sores - that must be lousy. looking at the info about bartonella it seems like it can cause a lot of varied symptoms.
