Hi, Devon & Mocha too!! Yay for the +4!! Soooooo anxious to hear what the Vet says, very thankful you are taking her ;-)
Even if her eye is not too bad right now, I am sure the Vet's expert eye will know what is going on based on symptoms you share with him/her, etc.

I've been wondering.....how is Mocha doing now after her dental? I remember you asking a bunch of questions about dentals awhile back. I am now in the 'exploring' stages of getting a dental arranged for Morris. I have had an estimate from our vet office, now I just need to start saving up for it! I am hoping to possibly arrange it for mid-Aug when I will be off work for awhile & will be home for a few days after the dental to keep a closer eye on him.

Mocha had her dental almost two months ago now. It is funny the way mocha acts. Before she was DX with diabetes, the only difference we noticed was extra water consumption. She never got lethargic or sick or anything "obvious". She was simply due for a rabies update so we mentioned it to the vet and she did a test and that is how we found out she was diabetic.

Before her dental, the only thing mocha had going on was bad breath and we were pretty certain she did not have that before eating the wet cat food so we assumed (our fault) that it was just from the wet cat food. Turned out she had 8 teeth that needed to come out due to FORL's. She never gave any indication she was in pain, no pawing at the mouth, no drooling, she was eating fine, we could rub her lips with the sides of our fingers and she purred, no wincing in pain or anything. But the vet assured us she was most definitely in pain with those teeth in her mouth. Apparently she is a tough cookie.

She did fine after her dental. Peter gave her meds twice a day for a few days and that was it. I felt like doing her dental was going to push her into regulation, her numbers were looking really good right before the dental, in fact the night before she didn't get any insulin cause she was in the 50s!

After the dental I personally feel like we lost A LOT of momentum. I was sad not to see better numbers knowing those bad teeth were out of her mouth. But I keep telling myself that's whats most important, she isn't in pain (even if she never acted like it before)

We had an estimate for a dental cleaning at a board certified vet two hours away from us. When we got there we really thought she just needed a cleaning. The quote the vet gave us in an e mail was several hundred dollars less then what was on paper in front of us. I could kick myself for not printing out what she quoted us in an e mail, but I did tell her the price was very different and she did take off about 200.00. But then once she got into mochas mouth and saw what needed to be done, that 200.00 felt like chump change after we saw the final bill :shock: But she just went back for her one month check up and the vet was extremely pleased at how well mochas mouth looked, so I guess that makes up for never being able to go out to eat or to a movie again :lol:

Nice +4 for Mocha.

I agree that the dentals are expensive , but worth it. We found out about Tess's FD when she was in for a regular cleaning and we mentioned the drinking and peeing. After seeing all the info here on the effects of bad teeth on overall health for our kitties, even DH has changed his mind about how necessary it is to have a cat's teeth cleaned. Since she didn't need any teeth removed this time, Tess was back to normal, eating almost as soon as she got home and showed no discomfort even though we had pain meds to give her.

IMHO dentals are worth it! Just hold them to the estimates.

I am pleased to hear that Mocha's dental went well! I have not been on the board here as much lately due to a chaotic work schedule (not to mention, attempting to have a personal life with my family as well!). I was actually surprised by the estimate my vet gave me for the dental - it was not as horrific as I imagined! Unfortunately, we have just spent a lot of money on our 2-legged kids (registering for the spring/summer activities, as well as pre-paying for their fall activities!), so money is a little tight right now. I told dh that this is something I would like to get done for Morris in the next few months, so we are just working on budgeting in this expense. When the fill-in vet looked at Morris' teeth briefly in Feb, she said she noticed a couple of areas that 'could' be causing him problems (this was when we were deciding if it was his teeth or p~itis causing him not to eat), but did not see anything that needed immediate attention. I am sad to hear, however, that Mocha's numbers did not cooperate after her dental! I am ever hopeful that Morris' numbers would be much better if/when we finally get his dental done!

yep, we made it back from the vets awhile ago. We weren't there very long. All she did was do a florescent flush in her eye, made it bright green, but showed no cornea damage, no physical damage to the eye and no irritation to the eye today. Checked out her eye with some flashlights and told us it could possibly be an allergy, or perhaps an ingrown eyelash that might irritate her from time to time. She did give us drops to use as needed, they are steroid drops. I asked if that was ok since she was a diabetic, she said yes cause the amount is so small it won't make a difference. The name of the drops is called Neomycin & Poly Dex 5ml drops twice daily as needed.

This isn't the vet that did mochas dental, but she knew mocha had one done at a board certified vet. When I went to pick up mochas paperwork before her dental I got a few questions from them as to why we chose to go to a vet so far away. Today this vet said, let me check out your teeth and I asked if the dissolving stitch that was left was gone and she said yes, then she said, wow she's already got a good bit of plaque and gingivitis on her teeth again and she showed us and I was shocked! The bottom half of her teeth are all discolored yellow/tannish. I can't believe it. She told us that maybe we could use a washcloth and really wipe them clean (of course she was showing us this as she had mochas mouth wide open, something we can NEVER do here at home) I'm really sick to my stomach that her teeth already look like that after just two months. I asked peter if he thought they never got real clean but he doesn't know. After spending thousands of dollars at a board certified vet you would just assume those teeth are going to sparkle for more then two months!
 
O geez about the Dental.. my girls have not had one & I dont think they ever will... mean mom I am! Good news about the drops though, you have something now & it sounds like she will be just fine!! Yay!!!
