Hi Everyone,

We switched Basil back to foods of about 3% carbs and under and his numbers look like old times! He is, however, fusy about his food, so I have had to mix some 7 and 5% foods in with the 2% to give him variety. I mean literally mix, in one feeding, and I mean mashed together to make picking out difficult.

So, from this ten-day experiment, it seems that he goes into the low blues more when the carb count goes up. Our question is can we give him those higher carb foods (7, 8 or maybe even 10% some day) from time to time? I think these low blues are still healthy numbers, right, so it sounds like it would be okay. He does love variety and I love having him eat without resorting to putting chicken dust or catnip on his food because he grew tired of it.

WCR: He's just great and so happy! He, unfortunately, brought in three tiny fieldmice one evening last week and a rabbit the next morning. All were alive and well and had to be captured and escorted to safety. He plays, gives head rubs, and sits in laps purring so loudly it's like a mini-jackhammer. AND he is singing and howling and carrying on half the night just sounding exuberant. His sister the civvie continues to improve every day as the weight melts off from her all wet food diet.

That's it for us!

What a wonderful report on Basil :-D Doesn't it just warm your heart to see him so happy and healthy again?

I don't know what those who know what they are talking about will say, but we use 5% and under as our normal foods, but mix it up with some of the 7-10% a few times a week to keep them interested in food and Smokey always brings herself down and doesn't seem to be trending towards higher numbers. I don't think occassional good blues will tax the P too much to cause damage.

Melanie, it really does make me feel good to see him so healthy again. He's years younger! And that's what I'd like to do, mix in those 7=10% carbs a few times to maintain his interest.

Michelle, Basil is the mighty hunter. It makes me feel terrible. He does it less now, but since he has been feeling like a kitten again, he seems to be picking up the pace.

I am thrilled to hear that Basil is acting all young and devilish. Glad the LC brought his numbers down. That was a great report Lydia...

 Raja & Shadow had a brother Jealousy GA who was our hunter too. I once ran around to the back door after going out the front door cause he was at the back door with a bird and it was alive!! I came up behind him, picked him up and brought him to the picnic table. I carefully put my fingers in his mouth from behind and the bird flew free. Boy, was Jealousy at me! All that effort to catch the bird and I let it go!!! I was shocked that he had such a light delicate hold on the bird....He brought home mice and chipmunks and snakes. All trophies for me. I warned everyone to PULEEESE look at his mouth through the glass door before opening it to let him in!!! :o
i miss J and reading your post reminded me of the things he used to do....hug Basil for me, k?

Hi Lydia, So great to hear about Basil's hunting feats! Stu caught a (baby) chimpmunk once, but I made him let it go. It played dead for a minute, then looked around and took off. He isn't a skilled hunter and runs at the little creatures, meowing the whole time!! Then he sits in front of their doorways and meows! I don't know where he was taught to hunt!!

Nice to hear that Basil's diet is bringing down his numbers.

Hi Pat! Hi Ella!

Great stories, both. Yes, Basil is quite the hunter and with the cat door--well, we've seen it all. We once had a chipmunk in the dishwasher.

Jealousy--what an unusual name. I think there must be a story there.

So glad to hear your happy story! Lydia you have done such a good job, and I think you know what you are doing--
Occasional blue wont set him back, but what do I know with a long termer?--Sending Hugs to you all & glad to hear happy news!
