I went through a period where my phone alarm wasn't waking me up especially for the 2am test/feeding time. I changed the ring tone and that did the trick. It seems my brain got use to the old ring tone. Just a thought.

PMPS 259

Soooooooo. Gordy left a little of one of his snacks behind today in his feeder and when I picked it up, I noticed little rice looking patches... fly eggs. *gags* I feel like I am trading one pest for another!!!!

Now, I live in FL, so this stuff is a given. But has anyone else come across this issue with the Petsafe5? Since its not air tight, pests can get in, especially little nats, that obviously are getting it on.

Lots of reading on Google tells me that he will be OK if he ingests the eggs. He is a cat. They eat all types of questionable things when we are not paying attention. But Id much rather not have to deal with this.

I am thinking of seeing if putting a small fan to blow on the feeder will keep them away .... and hopefully not my cat.

If I can't find a solution and it keeps happening, I may be forced to do dry for snacks until the fall. I don't really want to do that, but it may be for the best.

(Also, I wish he was more of a grazer, because Id buy a microchip feeder for him too in a heartbeat - that thing is pretty air tight!)

I may try to change the tone. Its worth a shot.

ETA: and of course my brand new feeder arrived today! LOL. But hey, I have 2 trays for it now, which is cool!

Did you get another of the same one? I have almot done that just to have a 2nd tray. I just can't justify ~$50 for a tray :banghead:

I just started having knats. I have only seen a few but tonight when I opened the feeder to start preparing it for the PM cycle 2 flew out.

They make fly tape but there are several options at the restauant supply store. I may look over there to see if there is something worth trying. The fan may dry out the food

Yeah, i was having issues with my old one. I think the motor was dying. But since it was out of warrenty, I couldn't get a free replacement - but they offered me 50% off a new one. Its not like I really had a choice in the matter... i needed a reliable feeder. :blackeye:

This is the first time I've noticed the eggs, but I have found nats in the feeder before. *shudders*

I was thinking of getting some traps too.

As for the fan drying the food out... I dont think so since its covered until it spins. I was just thinking even a slight breeze would make it too much effort for nats to land.

Its so gross.

Cool. I called them a month or so ago to ask if the sold replacement trays - they do not.

I gotta do something because one year we had such a horrible infestation of knats/fruit flies. I put bleach down the bathroom sinks but that wouldn't work in the kitchen because it is in constant use and has a garbage disposal. I don't remember what all I did but I researched and then did like 5 things on a Saturday- lol. One was to put ice (large quantity) through the disposal with it on (I probably went over board with about 2 bags). And then it was lemons (rine and all)run through it (disposal). They eventually went away but I don't want it to get as bad as it was that year. None of the diy trap solutions did anything to combat them.
