5/1 Fred AMPS 308

You asked why I preferred Lev. Most important, Neko liked it better. She occasionally walked away during the Lantus shot, stayed still and purred through the Lev one. Second reason I liked it better was predictability. She didn’t drop as fast (so less fast drop caused bounces), and I could sleep longer between tests at night. And serendipity, her nadir moved to about the time I got up four times a week for my workout. So I could test, and boost her with food if needed, or put out the auto-feeder to keep her safe. Since her onset was later, a couple benefits from that too. Onset was +5. I had five hours after shot time to get food into her on the rare times she was off her food. Second nice thing, I could test, feed shoot, and go out for dinner or a movie and be back by onset. The down side, the later onset meant I was often in bed before then and had to learn other ways to predict her cycles.

Thank you-that is very helpful. I can definitely see the advantage of having a nadir closer or at shot time, as you can be more sure of catching it.

The thing that might worry me is the later onset. If for whatever reason, Fred were to have a high pre-shot, then he's kind of stuck there for 5 or so hours before anything kicks in.

Typical Levemir onset is +4 and nadir +8. My girl liked to be different. You will also find that preshots tend to be lower as the insulin action is working later in the cycle. Which reminds me of one other thing I liked. Ideally you don't feed carbs after nadir, cause the insulin effect is slowing down after that and you can lose duration. With the later nadir, I was also able to give a +9 snack regularly during the day. That had been a traditional pre diabetes snack time for Neko, so we both like getting back to that.

And one other thing, ECID - how Levemir works in one cat, doesn't mean it's the same for all.
