After a very eventful day at the vet yesterday for Simon's dental, things have calmed down a little here. Simon did well last night and even posted a green number before bed. This was without any insulin at all that day. I decided to take the fat off the .25 dose this morning and see what happens. I will try to do a curve today. Simon doesn't seem to be bothered this morning and was ravenous, eating with gusto. He is a member of the very clean plate club. The only problem I had was trying to give him his bupe today for pain and also the liquid clavamox. I know his mouth must be sore and it was very hard to open his mouth to administer both of these meds. Does anyone have any suggestions? I think I got more clavamox on my hand than in his mouth and he bit my DH's finger.

Right now, Simon is sitting on his "testing blanket" and purring away. His purr sounds a little different, probably because he is missing 4 toothies! He also is making what sounds like a cute little burp noise every once in awhile. Maybe that is from the anesthesia in his system?

My civvie, Cleo, is even being fairly civil to Simon and hasn't hissed at her too much because of the vetty smell. They both slept on the bed and there was no fighting going on.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday. Thanks again for holding my hand throughout the whole dental experience. I know I was such a baby about it, but at least I know everyone here can relate to my nervousness. I'm just glad it is over and Simon is going to be without all that tooth pain.

Hi Georgia & Simon,
I never did get back to your condo yesterday, but I'm very glad to hear that Simon's dental went OK, even though he did have 4 teeth extracted. He'll get used to his "new mouth" very soon. Clavamox is so difficult to give! You have to open Simon's mouth by squeezing the hinge of the jaw. Then slip the dropper in the space between the eye tooth and the first molar and administer the Clav. Don't worry if it all doesn't go in. A lot will wind up on his face outside his mouth and he will lick to get it off (thereby participating in the process)!

Simon seems to be going up with each test instead of down like he usually does. Will the Clavamox cause bg numbers to go higher?

Thanks for the advice on the Clavamox, Ella. I'll try opening his mouth like you suggested. I think if I try to open squeezing the bottom of the jaw, that should hurt less than opening with the top of the mouth because 3 of the teeth that were extracted were on the top and only 1 on the bottom.

Hi Georgia, glad to hear all went okay and Simon and you survived the dental. It is stressful every time for me, too! Ella gave you some good advice on the liquid antibiotic. I always get pills for that reason, but they can hide the pill, so I'm not sure which is best for me.
Thanks for mentioning the Sophisticat Mixed Grill also spiked Simon's bg. I had four cans of it! There was a Chopped Grill Sophisticat which did not spike, but all of sudden Maggie doesn't care for it!

i don't have any idea, but i'll just ask the question that i was wondering. would his change for the normal curve be because of no insulin yesterday?

aren't you glad you got it done and don't have to worry about it anymore?! so glad he's doing ok.

Julie, I'm hoping that the spike is because of no insulin yesterday and not some other thing going on. Simon always is so sensitive to any medication it seems, so I sure hope that the spike is not because of the clavamox. If so, I can look forward to higher and higher numbers for at least a week.

I suspect the AB's, but don't know for sure... It wasn't a fur shot this AM? I hope he comes back down soon.

I know on giving the Clavamox. Mannie resisted too, though I found that whatever I spilled on him he usually leaned up on his own. I was able to maneuver the dropper onto his mouth, and If I went slow enough allowing him to swallow he usually took it all fine. of course this required that I sat on top of him, pretty much eliminating his ability to move.... :lol: :lol: I have read too of folks that have mixed it with the kitties food - not always recommended, as there are no guarantees that they will get all the dose. I tried this once with Mannie - he actually ate it all up. :shock:

Simon has posted much higher numbers today, even going into the yellow at +11. He seems very lethargic, although I guess I would be too if I just had surgery with anesthesia the day before. I tried to see if he would eat his food if I put some of the Clavamox in the food instead of syringing in his mouth. He made a valient effort to eat it, but after a few bites, had enough. I had to syringe the rest in his mouth which is not going so well. He did eat more food (with no Clavamox!) so I think he has enough in his stomach so he won't get sick. He is purring and cleaning himself which are good signs.
