4/8 (late) - Scooter's first vacation! Dose decrease!

Ben and I rented a car and drove to my mom's house yesterday (6th) afternoon. It is about a 3.5 hour drive, but we had to keep stopping to check on the cat so it took more like 4.5 hours. He is AWFUL to travel with and cried, howled, and then frantically scratched at the carrier the whole. way. there. It was tolerable honestly, Ben complaining about it was far more annoying than Scooter was. We had a minor hypo scare with a 56 at +2, but the stress seemed to keep him up enough not to crash. He would NOT eat in the carrier (although he snuck in at night to eat the food out of it lol)

When we got here finally, he just casually walked out of the carrier and went off to explore my mom's house. She has 3 dogs and 2 other cats and he was pretty meh about all of it. He actually got face to face with my mom's boy Tao and they just kinda sniffed eachothers' faces, gave eachother a few licks, and walked away. I was surprised Scooter didn't try to eat him, honestly, lol. He wants to explore the house but I don't want to take the risk of someone accidentally letting him out because my mom's cats are in and out constantly. I got him a tag with our phone number and "diabetic" on it just in case. He is confined to a bedroom, laundry room, and small bathroom in the house but it is more than enough room for him.

He's been very, very good on his vacation overall. He is relaxed as could be, eating a ton as usual, using the litter box and sleeping on the futon with us at night. I'm actually quite surprised about how good he's being :)

He actually earned a dose decrease today as well! I was visiting with my two sisters (one is very very sick with cancer - OMG she looks so horrible :( ) and their 4 kids about 30 minutes away so we had our hands full... my mom came to the rescue and tested Scooter successfully and only wasted a single strip! She has bad eyesight though so that is understandable :) I was impressed that she had no problem with doing it. She gave him some HC gravy which he gobbled up and we came home ASAP to test him and he had jumped back up to 119 by then.

All in all a good day, and another decrease for Scoots! He's now on less than half the insulin he was less than 2 weeks ago. It feels great. :D
 
Great that the critters are all getting along that is amazing.

Great that Scooter is relaxed and enjoying his first vacation.

Super Great that your mom was able to test Scooter and take appropriate action. Mine was visiting recently and also scored a reduction test on her first alone test, she also scored a vein :lol:

Also great to hear that Scooter has halved his insulin and to hear you sounding so positive. You score a feel good condo award today :-D

The only ungreat is your sister, so sorry to hear about her cancer :sad:
 
What a great report on Scooter!! I've not used it (yet) so maybe some others can comment but Rescue Remedy is an all natural preparation that is supposed to have a calming effect on animals. It may make the trip a little easier. (Or maybe, Scooter just wanted to see out of the window or was simply commenting on the scenery!!)

Sounds like a good visit so far and it is really nice that you could go to see your family. (We are sending positive thoughts for your sister in her battle with cancer.)

When we travel with Rusty he rides free in the car (with the carrier door propped open in case he wants to go into it). He really likes looking out the window and never meows or complains. We carry a small litterbox and he always uses it. We spread newspaper around in case of carsickness, so that if (when!) there is a vomit, we can just tear off that part of the newspaper. If you try this "free riding" I would suggest a harness and leash at first, just as a precaution in case he might bolt when a door is open.

Good luck on your return trip. We have done "free riding" with each of our cats. On the first occasion with each cat we started with the cat in the carrier and once we were underway, reached back and opened the carrier door. Since there are two beans, it is easy for the passenger bean to keep the kitty away from the driver.

thanks everyone! it looks like he might be headed towards another reduction today too!

I would let him free ride but we have a rental car and if he made a mess in the car we'd be in a world of trouble because we weren't supposed to have him in there at all. it doesn't make sense to me because kids are just as likely to upchuck on the seat... oh well :roll:
 
My cats both usually cry the whole way to a destination and then are pretty silent once they know they are on the ride back home. I use Rescue Remedy for long trips. I give a couple drops orally, put a couple drops on top of the front paws, and put a couple drops around the carrier. You can use either the pet formula or the child formula (the adult formula has alcohol in it, so don't use that). I prefer to use a carrier because it's safer for the cat, but for short trips around town, I'll let Ginger free ride with a harness and leash on. Both my cats have lots of bells, id tags, and are microchipped, for just in case. I'm glad Scooter seems to be feeling pretty much at home at your mom's house.
 
I'm having trouble getting to Scooter's ss (I think it's my internet connection so nothing wrong at your end) so I'm not sure if this is the case but I'll mention it anyway to be safe. If Scooter goes below 50 again in the 2 cycles following a reduction you generally don't reduce again. This will be shed action from the previous higher dose and a 2nd reduction is unlikely to hold.
 
That sounds great! I'm so glad Scooter is doing so well. Racci screams in the car also but visits well also. She never vomits though, thankfully. Have a great time.

Hi, this is my first time visiting your condo, so your subject line caught my eye. I'm sorry I haven't' visited before this, but I'm ill and computer work hurts a lot, so I try to stay with a few people so they can get to know me and Daphne. I just could not visit everyone so, I picked about five and ….

Two things, one is that Daphne always put up such a fight on rides and would p and upchuck in her carrier. But the last time, I told my DH to drive to the vet and I would try and hold her in the back seat and wrap a towel around her and hold her like a baby and talk to her. I could not believe the difference, she was as calm as can be, not one cry, nothing. I read you have a rental car so I understand.

The other thing was I ruled out taking her on vacation because I thought most cats would maybe urinate all over to mark their territory and its a rental house. They know my cousin will have her little dog and the owners are ok with that. So now I'm wondering if I may be able to take her along. She was not dxed when I made my plans. :cry:

I'm sorry to read about your sister, we have a lot of cancer in our family, including my sister, but she is in remission for over 7 years now. I will send her some healing vines.

That was our first dose reduc in 4 days :)

We managed to make it home in one piece (but only barely) lol. I put Scooter front facing on the way back so he could see out the windshield and he was significantly quieter, only the occasional mew to let us know he was still there. My mom also gave me a harness that belonged to our old family dog that passed away a while back and it fits him perfectly. We let him out at a rest stop about half way but he wanted back in the car! :lol:

I will update his SS soon but I am really pleased with how well he was with the trip. :-D
