Morning all--

Headed to petsmart in a few.. And going to put my patience pants on.. I'm thinking I might need to pick up an extra pair while I'm out!
Be back on later to update SS from last night, never got much below 500 if at all.. Hope everyone's enjoying their Saturday.

Have a good trip...I really think that once you find a low carb food that Smokey will eat, you'll see a big drop in the preshot numbers. Jez got dry food at the vets once (during a curve) and it spiked her to 583 - a number I haven't seen anything close to myself (thankfully)......

Morning!

Any rec's on a wet food to grab at petco that Mr. Picky might like? I will grab what I can afford today and some more next week. He's got FF classics here but not tripping his trigger. I've added warm water, parm, crushed up treats, he wants nothing to do with it. Might be the texture, might be that for a few days after DX he had to get forcefed a pate and it's bringing back bad memories.. never know with kitties..

Although I know cats aren't supposed to eat a lot of fish - if he likes tuna- something fishbased might work. Also, the Sheba pate has more of a chunky texture that might help.....mine love the stuff. And I believe their premium cuts are 10% carb.....you could try a can of that as well.

Good luck.....

Re: 4/6 AMPS 571

While it as I discovered last night has wheat gluten in it...Friskies makes a Tuna in Sauce that is low carb and fairly chunky...That might trip his trigger the other trick can be adding a little human tuna to the pate to make it nice and stinky for him.

Also you can try sprinkling it with catnip..although when I tried it with a couple of mine they wanted to roll in it...messy. Or see if he will eat it if you finger feed it to him, sometimes they will eat stuff off your fingers before learning that it is really yummy on their own.

Mel you're a genius!

Mixed a half can with some water and catnip, 10 minutes later almost a half can was gone!
I'm doing a happy dance!!!
Glad that worked.. None of my brood even took a bite of the wellness. Ill take another trip to petco this week. They didn't like the freeze dried treats either..lol..smh. Thank you petco for havinga good return policy!

Re: 4/6 AMPS 571

Just to throw in my 2 cents, I found that a big issue was that my cats have trouble actually getting the food in their mouths. When I feed, I cut the 5.5 oz can in quarters, then flip a quarter onto a saucer, then slice it in 3 slices, cut each slice lengthwise and cut those pieces into cubes a little bigger than dry food pieces. It seems to make a major difference for them.

I can't remember who first explained to me, when I came to the boards, about the way cats eat, but they flip the dry pieces into their mouth with the tip of their tongue and they can't do that with wet food in a pile. But they can do it with the little cubes, most of the time.

You might try cutting it in little cubes and see if he eats more. It might not be the taste, but the fact that he just can't get it in his mouth. If you feed half a can, as opposed to my 1/4 can, then cut up however much you feed. When they have trouble getting the food in their mouth, they get frustrated quickly and walk away, it may not be that they don't like it.

My Lucian is still the only one that has figured out how to BITE the food, the other 2 still want to just lick it, although Shadow is getting better at it, Patches still has issues and doesn't eat near enough. With Shadow and Patches, it helps to scrap up the cubes into a taller pile after a few minutes, so they can get a hold of it.

Obviously, the more dense the pate is, the easier it is to cube, some flavors are more dense than others, even in the same brand. I.E. anything with liver in it is more dense than a predominately fish one and chicken is much less dense, softer. But I manage to cube them all and the extra 60 seconds it takes is worth it to me, to get them to eat better.

I understand your frustration not getting him to eat, I went thru it too, with 3 cats 6,14,16 that had been on dry food all their lives and I went 'cold turkey' on them, either adjust or starve, knowing how bad the dry was for them, health wise. May sound harsh, but it was tough love in my book and I threw out all the dry the day I brought Lucian home from the hospital and found this sight and read about cat nutrition.

Keep working at it, he'll adjust and be healthier for it.

Big hugz! :YMHUG:

Hey whatever works to get him to eat what is good for him...sorta like covering veggies in cheese to sneak them past my human kids..lol

And not a genius at all...Just a crazy cat lady after you have been owned by as many of the little furry terrorist as I have you learn a few tricks of the trade, and if catnip works then it leaves more Parm cheese for the spaghetti.

Also a little known trick...got a cat that is so-so on catnip...try Valerian. Most cats Valerian is catnip on steroids.

Today has been a day with a couple firsts, and this Mom is happy happy!

Today is the first day his #'s have went one way and one way only, DOWN.. crossing my fingers that this trend continues! SS is updated as far as +11.

Also, Smokey ate the half of can of Friskies Country Style Dinner at +5, thanks to Mel's suggestion of catnip! I am hoping that as time goes on he will continue eating the canned, and that I can slowly decrease the catnip. But if catnip is a deal breaker, I'm fine with that too!

I'll try to update again tonight after PMPS and I get a reading around +3 or +5. But LOVING the trend I've seen today! party_cat

There you go, his shed is starting to fill and letting him use more and more of the insulin to work on his BGs. :thumbup Now to get him eating what is good for him and get him off all those carbs so the insulin can really do it's job and get him to feeling better and better...

On the upside....catnip is really easy to grow if he becomes determined that he needs a little salad with his meals...lol And way cheaper than insulin.

Yes! That's a good idea too!

Just curious, what are the chances I will see a HUGE drop due to the 2.5 he got 2 nights ago? I'm going to be on top of it, of course. Just trying to prepare myself as best I can..

Re: 4/6 AMPS 571 +5 532

You shouldn't his shed has more than likely started to adjust it's self to the 1.75u he is getting now.

The best way I can describe how Lantus works is to think of it as a funnel that you are trying to keep the level of water at the top of the funnel even with the top edge while the water is still running out the bottom. Too much and it spills over (hypo) but not enough and the level at the top drops (not enough) but at just the right amount and the level stays even while the right amount flows out of the bottom.

Lantus basically forms little time release crystals under the skin....much like when you add bath salts to your bath water...some dissolve instantly while there is always just a little bit of grit in the bottom of the tub if you get in right away that dissolve over the time you are soaking in the tub. Most likely all that really happened with that 2.5u a couple nights ago was that you helped him fill his shed a little bit faster than if you would have started him from the beginning at the 1.75u.
