Hi Folks:

Jack let me sleep last night and boy did I need it! His numbers are pretty good on the decrease and all the P's are great! He is on guard of the yard and happy as a kitty watching birdies. :)

Scooters Vet is having trouble getting bupe from her supplier. What other pain meds do folks use for diabetic kitties. The last thing she wants to do is make his diabetes cause problems right now. Scooter is especially snuggly today. It is a cold dark spring day here and it was hailing as well. Great day for homemade tomatoes soup and grilled cheese for all! :)

Thank you!

Linda

Have you tried a compounding pharmacy? My vet used to get his from one and I ordered directly from them. I think I read somewhere else about this. I hope it isn't long term shortages about to cause us big problems. Sorry but no idea about other pain killers. Maybe put the question mark up and add it to your topic?

Bummer about the bupe supply - I too get mine from a compounding pharmacy. Do you have a hospital nearby with a pharmacy in the vicinity - that's where my compounding pharmacy is. My vet's choices for pain relief were in order bupe, gabapentin, then tramadol. Might depend on the type of pain as to which makes the most sense.

Yeah for a good sleep! Jack's really working the new dose though - looking good.

Tomato soup and grilled cheese - one of my fav comfort food combinations. :)

We tried bupe, gaba & tramadol. the tramadol gave punkin hallucinations - i think he thought he saw things flying around the room. Only got one dose of that one! The gaba is good for nerve pain, but either it didn't work for him or we didn't get to a large enough dose. I'm not sure which. We stuck with the bupe.

One other option is metacam. It has a black box warning on it for cats that it may cause liver issues, but perhaps you are more worried about keeping Scooter comfy than you are anything else. Metacam is used in other countries and I've seen multiple people from out of N. America say that they've used it and that their vets say that the issue in the US is that the doses are too high. It seems to be very effective. In your situation I would consider using it to keep Scooter out of pain if you can't get Bupe.

Our veterinary acupuncturist gave metacam to his own cat and he said it was a very small dose. I want to say 3 drops, but don't quote me on it. If you're interested you could explore the issue with your vet.

Thank you Wendy and Julie! I never asked about who my Vet's supplier is. Perhaps she gets it from a compounding pharmacy and that is the reason it is in low supply. I do know Scooter is not the only one getting it from her. When she called today to tell me she wouldn't get any till tomorrow she let that slip. It seems to be working for him but I will ask about the metacam and the gabapentin.
