4/6 Gizzy....Has anyone heard of the drug (NSAID) Onisior?

This is the drug the dr. gave me for Gizzy's arthritis pain. It is not available in the U.S. yet but will be this summer. He said it's been widely used in Europe for several years with minimal side effects. Most of those side effects occurred when the cat received 20x the dose. He gave me 6 tablets to try and to see if I can see a difference in Gizzy's movement/behavior. I'm excited, yet hesitant to try it. I figured I would give it to him the next few days as I will be home most of the time.... Has anyone heard of it??

I've heard of it but only because the animal health division of the company I work for makes it :lol: Sorry, I know that's not much help.

Here's the non-US web site for the product: http://www.ah.novartis.com/products/en/onsior_cat.shtml It's apparently not available in the US (yet).

If you do not have current bloodwork, especially for kidney values, on Gizzy, I would get them before starting this drug. Once having started the drug, I'd want a repeat set of labs in a week or two. Any of the NSAIDs can have an effect on the kidneys. Other of the NSAIDs (i.e., Metacam) have received a black box warning from the FDA because of their causing acute renal failure in some cats. I'd also read the information that Squeem provided in her link -- especially the precautions section.
