Day 6 the steroid and Leroy has side effects of FD-like symptoms ohmygod_smile PU, slightly PD, and I think he's losing a little weight  He looks awfully concave between his ribs and his back legs  And he's whiny and crouches on all fours. Not meatloafing, just crouching. Possible tummy upset? Or maybe I'm just super paranoid :? Just 4 more 1 ml doses and then we decrease to 0.5 ml. Leroy takes the med just fine as long as it's mixed with yummy gravy food. I'm trying meat baby food today, Beechnut brand with nothing but turkey or chicken in broth.

Leroy is otherwise his usual crazy insane self bcatrun_gif @-) I bought a new fishing pole toy last weekend. ADD Leroy went nuts over it the first day and then completely lost interest in it

Tarragon has asthma and used to get steroid shots, which led to FD. He now takes the same steroid you are giving Leroy only in pill form every other day, but long term. It sounds like Leroy's tummy might be upset. When Tarragon first started out on the pills, they had us give him pepcid along with it to help with any tummy issues which are common with steroids. Have you tried a pepcid? I would think that it would be worth a shot.

No, I haven't tried Pepcid. It's the AC one, right? Half of the 4mg pill? I'm going to call Dr. B later and FYI him on the side effects. He'll probably be ok with me giving the Pepcid but I want to check.

Yes the pepcid ac and 1/4 of the 10 mg pill. Definitely check with your dr first. That is what they have those of us who have asthmatic kitties on prednisone give.

Will Leroy agree to a poke? Might not hurt to monitor his BGs for awhile. Fingers and paws crossed for a speedy full recovery!

I'm sure he would. I play with his ears all the time and he doesn't care  I was actually rubbing his ears last night to see if I could warm them up without a rice sock. And I'm sure I can warm/poke/get blood on test strip before Leroy's ADD kicks in  Big plus: Leroy has huge ears  I have to dig out Squishy's testing stuff and buy some test strips and lancets.

Can I get liquid Pepcid AC over the counter or do I need to get it at the vet hospital's pharmacy? I really don't want to give Leroy pills, even with Pill Pocket, beause he has difficulty swallowing anything that's not mushy @-) He's choked/gagged on teeny pieces of freeze dried treats before ohmygod_smile

Guess who has a vet appointment tomorrow? @-) Dr. B was laughing when he called me back. He said, "You mean to tell me that you have another diabetic??" Dr. B doesn't think the PU/PD/weight loss is steroid related. Oh, and water guzzling ohmygod_smile He says it's common in dogs but for a cat who just started steroids 6 days ago it's highly unlikely. He wants to do bloodwork, including a fructosamine. He's holding off on Pepcid until he sees Leroy. And he dropped the steroid dose to 0.5 ml for now. I had just given Leroy the 1 ml when Dr. B called ohmygod_smile

FD symptoms just started right after the first 2 steroid doses. Nothing else has changed. Leroy eats only NV raw. He doesn't care for canned food unless it's the gravy kind. And he does like the Beechnut chicken baby food. It doesn't have a lot of broth so I had to add water to it.

Squeem-

Trinket, Merlin and I are all keeping our fingers, toes and paws crossed for Leroy!! No diabetes!
Give your mom a break kid!!!!

My defective orange Squishy sent me a defective cat ohmygod_smile

I hope these are just temporary symptoms nailbite_smile

Marvista vet said that these are classic symptoms for prednisilone/prednisone. Not sure how your meds differ. Squishy knew you'd take good care of him. Big hugs.

That he did. Squishy got top notch vet care himself. Dr. B and Dr. P, and even the gerbils' vet, said that they had never had a client who was so dedicate to their pet's care as I was.

So I dug out Squishy's testing stuff. And experienced a flood of memories  I had forgotten that his stuff was in a surgical tool autoclave bag and the items had labels with Squishy's info. And the date printed on the labels is what ended up being Squishy's GA date  I took a moment to look back at Squishy's last bg numbers. Nice blues even though he wasn't feeling well and the next day was admitted to the ER. I'm going to use Squishy's never been used back up meter for Leroy. I don't want to lose Squishys' numbers even though I do have it on the SS.

Gosh Squeem, I totally know how you feel. It's really tough digging that stuff out. I still have Boomer's meter too. I'm praying Leroy doesn't have or get diabetes. (HUGS)
