Do you know of a good store bought food for diabetic cats instead of paying for a prescription
Hello and welcome,
You can begin by posting in the Feline Health forum to tell us a little about your cat and what questions you have. Most of us don’t use prescription food for diabetic cats because of the carb being higher. A lot of people use Fancy Feast Pates because of the low carb content but there are many foods out there you can choose. I order from either Chewy or Petco and feed my cat mostly Weruva foods. Fancy Feast can be bought at the grocery stores. There is a nice food chart in the Feline Health forum that lists different foods and the carb content. We also ask that you start a spreadsheet on your cat so you can get help with your cat’s insulin dose if needed. I will tag some people who may be able to help you get started here. @Diane Tyler's Mom @Bandit's Mom @Suzanne & Darcy @Chris & China (GA)

A diabetic cat needs to eat a low carb canned or raw diet. The first thing many vets do is to ask you to feed a "prescription" food. There's nothing in prescription food that miraculously treats diabetes. Many of them are expensive, too high in carbs (especially the dry ones) and the ingredients tend to be of low quality. Any low carb (with carbohydrates less than 10%) canned food will do.
Most of our members in the US feed Fancy Feast Classics, Friskies Pates or 9-Lives Ground because they get less than 10% of their calories from carbs. They are also easy to find and affordable.

Which country are you in? We can point you to some country-specific cat food information.

Max’s lab results are back and posted. Everything looks good except his PSL is even higher than before. Now it’s 49 (8-26). Max always has pancreatitis now it seems. He takes cerenia and Ondansetron every day. He gets either Gabapentin or buprenorphine for pain and we don’t give sub-q fluids unless absolutely necessary because of his cardiac issues. The vet said I was doing my best for that. The only other thing she brought up was that his bun and creatinine were on the upper limits of normal. After I received a copy of the labs to look at myself, that bun/creatinine didn’t look too bad, but the creatinine was upper limits of normal.
I am concerned though about his lymphocytes. They have been steadily decreasing and this month they drastically dropped way below normal limits being only 285 (1200-8000). The vet did not mention this to me and I have called back to ask more about it. Still waiting for her call at this time. I’ve mentioned it before when they were slightly below average and was reassured that the Budesonide he takes for IBD can cause this. I don’t know if such a drastic reduction in lymphocytes could be caused by oral steroids like Budesonide? That’s worrisome, and the PLI results too, but otherwise I’m really happy with his lab results. @Wendy&Neko

All my kitties on steroids had reduced lymphocytes. Aging also contributes. At one point Neko's was 17% of low end of normal, she was on budesonide. And was higher the next blood work. I agree, the rest of his labs look good considering he's "complicated". You are doing a great job with him.
