Hello LL friends ~O)

Sorry we have been so scarce around here, life is pretty busy right now!!

Bailey, the little stinker, just when she was starting to get brief winks of green and more blue after her dental... has started eating the dog's kibble. I was suspicious because of the higher numbers the last couple days (SS is finally up to date!) and I busted her with her head in Chloe's bowl last night. I don't know what to do. :?

We just switched the dogs from Nutro Lamb & Rice to Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight over the weekend. Blue has gained weight since his dx and prednisone treatment, and we are trying to control that. The new food has Brewer's Yeast in it - which Bailey loves - and is smaller pieces so easier for a (TOOFLESS!!) kitty to eat I guess.

I know many of you don't have dogs... but I need ideas. My dogs are large (50 and 90 lbs, roughly) and I'm not sure canned food for them will be feasible budget-wise... I will look into it this weekend. My only other idea is to feed the dogs outside, but they really spend most of their time in the house so I don't love that idea. WHY oh why does she have to eat the dog's kibble?! Oh kibble, you are my nemesis. cat(2)_steam

I hope you all are doing well, have a great Fursday!

Melissa,

I have 3 dogs and I had to stop free feeding them when Tinkerbell was 1st dx'd (b4 I had Tawny). 2 of my dogs are large, a collie & a shepherd mix, and one is a little smaller, maybe 45-50 lbs. They get half their daily allotment in the morning & half in the evening, they scarf it down, I pick up the bowls and put them out of cat range, b/c even if Bailey would lick the dog bowls that could affect BG, I know it does Tinkerbell's. The dogs are fine on this system. They actually get about 1/2 a cup more kibble per feeding than the collie rescue people I got the collie from recommended, the directions on the bag recommend, and the vet recommends. they are not overweight b/c they pretty much run it off, nor are they underweight. So I guess the short answer is my dogs don't free feed anymore.

Thanks, Desi, for your response. My dogs are grazers and do not eat all their food at one time, and I am not sure how to get them to do that. I guess I could pick up the bowls after a certain time, but they would likely be pretty hungry on that system for a while... doesn't really seem fair. Oh well, I'm sure I'll figure something out. ohmygod_smile

Bailey, you are a little rascal. Good thing you're so cute. Maybe the dogs would have a different attitude about food if it wasn't down all the time? Good luck figuring something out. Maybe use the question icon and question in your subject line to get more input? We are sure happy it's Fursday around here!

Maybe if you do start putting their food outside and they have to keep going out for it they will start to eat more of it at once? Or you could slowly get them used to 2 meals a day by splitting the food into something like 6 mini meals to start with then back to 4/5 etc

Naughty Bailey!

I had the same problem...dog was a grazer and cat would get in his food (actually, this was before Mikey's dx;it was Jesse James, my civvie with urinary issues that I was worried about). In order to get the dog to eat his meals all at once, I add a little warm water and a dollop (a heaping tablespoon) of canned food to his kibble and stir it to make a gravy. (And I do mean just a dollop; a large can lasts almost a week, so cost-wise it's not expensive.) It worked like a charm; he wolfs his meals down now with obvious delight, whereas before he'd be kind of ambivalent. It makes me smile to see him enjoy it so much and there's never any left for the cats to get into. There are also gravy products for dogs that you can buy and just squirt on the kibble; my dog has food allergies so he can't have those, but they're an easy option, though probably more expensive than just a can.

many dogs are fed on schedule - i'd think yours will adapt, just like bailey had to. i'd just feed them in an area separate from the little hoover and pick up the food when i open the door. we had to keep our dogs/cats from eating each other's food because of tummy issues. it'll work.

i was just telling some friends the other day about bailey eating the lancet! good times!
