What is it lately about all the boys wearing tutus?? SHAMEFUL I tell ya. That is just no way to impress the ladies son!!

At least Autumn is sensible enough to be warming herself on the sundeck.

Then there's Cali. Actually not bad considering I just left her alone for a week to let her decompress and she's still on Friskies Dry. She's gonna be a pill to convert so Monday I need to get her the lowest carb dry I can get my hands locally. And easy her over from there. Might even have to bite the bullet and order her Young Again Zero Carb dry ick. She did at least like the gravy off the Purrfectly Chicken pouch she had for breakfast and nibbled at the meat.

Started her back on the Levemir this morning at .5u since we're working on the diet issue right now. One step at a time.

Re: 4/5 Autumn amps-270, Cassanova amps-347, Cali amps-425

C'mon Cassanova... you don't want Alska movin' in on your girl.

Aha I figured out a way to convert Cali. Started mixing the dry in with FF with florintines and I'm slowly decreasing the dry once completely over to the Florintines then I'll slowly mix in more pate while decreasing the HC wet. Fingers crossed she doesn't catch on that she is being tricked into a healthy diet.

oic! so cali is no civvie. what is the lowest carb dry, mel? i cant afford the young again...and u said ick..haha. is it the friskies kind? im looking for 1 for some civvies. thanks!

Wellness Core is about the lowest but still higher than I like feeding. None of it is good for cats in general and if Cali wasn't on insulin or diabetic so she absolutely must eat I'd be playing the hungry card until she figured out its pate or starve. It makes my skin crawl now every time I put dry out for her because I know with her readings if she'd just convert we'd be throwing another OTJ party.

The risk of spending $50 on the YA is that she might not eat it. I hear it also stinks. I used the Wellness in transitioning Nuzzles. She didn't really like it but ate it because it was the only dry food offered. After that the watered down pate was looking real yummy. She wasn't interested in any dry food after that (not even her precious kitten chow) That was a joyous day.

I am hoping for the same success with Cali.

im not for any dry, but i wonder who/why they thot YA stinks? i thot it smelled good. i got the free sample of zero carb and used as a treat for larry. all the cats lovedddddd it. iwas shocked bc i heard so many bad things about it. a girl had said she used it as tiny treats for her diabetic so thats why i got a sample.
the canned stinks to me. i still gag almost every time i smell it.

I read a post where they moved the YA food bowl to a porch because they couldn't stand to be in the same room with it.

I too am an advocate for no dry food as most of us are but when I fostered a very sick 14 year old maine coon who was only 5 pounds, then it became a matter of survival no matter what - until I could get her transitioned - she had to eat and it was kitten chow which really motivated me to work on this one. So I had to go out an buy dry food and then tossed it when she was transitioned. Regardless of the carbs, all dry food is bad because of the harm it causes to the urinary tract and teeth. I will never feed it to my own cats again - in fact, they weren't allowed to transition - I just stopped buying it.

But I would work with fosters again - even if just for transitioning. Mel, you have all the tricks to try and you found the one that works and that's what you have to do. I am cheering for your success.

that interesting robin. every1 is diff. the canned is the worst smell i have found lol
why is dry bad for their teeth? its so sad ppl arent educated on feeding wet for cats. i would have never known if larry hadnt become diabetic. i dont know any1 who feeds wet except for ppl on the board, or those that have 1 cat and the cat absolutely loves it.
mel knows all the tricks, yep! way to go mel.

The powder on the dry food sticks to teeth and gums like a coating - just like it is made to stick to the food. Any food on and around the teeth can cause gum disease. Also, the misconception that cats need dry food for their teeth is funny considering that they don't have flat teeth for grinding. Their teeth are pointy for tearing. Whenever you see a cat move food to the side and gnaw on it, they are working and strengthening their teeth the way they are supposed to. That's why we put raw chunks in with the ground food. I was sad to see that my foster kittens are being fed a little bit of dry food on the advice of their vet who said they need it for their teeth. The owners want to be good patients but when I explained how bad dry food is for their teeth they understood.

Feeding dry food is so much more convenient. You can leave for long periods and even weekends without worrying about feeding. Unfortunately, people may be less willing to adopt pets if they can't free feed and have to hire petsitters for those weekend jaunts. It's a double-edged sword for sure.

Cat's teeth aren't designed for crunching they're designed to rip and tear meat off the bone. Cats don't have grinding teeth so dry food wears down the teeth and also sticks around the gumline. Kinda like us eating potato chips or cookies.

One of the side effects of no longer smoking..I now can smell the canned food and yep it stinks! Yet another reason my kids are going back to raw. I like the smell of raw chicken so much better as well as it being healthier for them.

wow that is so sad :( poor cats! and they were euthanizing about 40 cats/dogs a day here at our pound until a group steppe d in to find them homes. problem is theyll take ANY home to get them adopted. dont mean to get off track, its just i know most of those r eating dry. :(
the 1 i need to rehome is still here bc idk any1 to take her, let alone feed her good food. its scary. idk what will happen when/if i have to move. oh well. hope u all have a good day!
