4/3 Fur Ball BG 186 Have question about meds

Hi there-
So we started Fur Ball on Clindamycin (1ml orally BID) last night in preparation for his dental on Friday (plus the removal of the mast cell tumor). He has been acting really lethargic and sad tonight after we gave him his dose. I checked his BG just now and it was 186. I am really not sure what to do. I hate that we have triggered his sugar levels. We thought we were doing something to help Fur Ball out and now we are not sure if we should follow through on the surgery. Any input would be helpful.

If the clindamycin is a liquid, it could very well have sugar in it. I'd check it. That could be why he's high. Paws crossed.

You're doing the best for him.....we will all hope he will just come right back down.

Yes, it is a liquid. Both our vet and the dental vet are aware FB is a diabetic in remission and said it would be safe. I'm kicking myself for trusting them. I just googled whether it had sugar in it and one of the side effects "High blood sugar has been reported by people with high blood pressure, diabetes, type 2 diabetes".

Ughh. This is so frustrating. We are tempted to call off the surgery but don't know if that is a knee jerk reaction. I feel so badly for Fur Ball. We gave away our insulin so I guess we will have to wait and see and keep testing. He will definitely NOT be getting his AM dose.

Hi Karen, sorry to hear about the high BG. If the meds are causing the spike, there's no reason to fear that it will force him out of remission. The elevated BGs could also be symptomatic of other issues, like the tumor or teeth. Paws crossed that after his vetty procedures he'll come back down to normal ranges. Rhiannon's Shadow just had her dental and was experiencing some elevated BGs beforehand. Big hug! Sending tons of vines for FB, too. Please keep us updated.

FB was pretty lethargic through the night. He was definitely not appreciating the sugar high. I checked him at 1am and he was still in the same spot on his bed in the other room. But at least he purred. This morning his BG was down to 112 so obviously NO meds today. BUT was a soooo grateful he is coming down on his own. We are waiting for the vet to open up so we can discuss options.

FB is still resting. I think his body still hurts as he does not want to be touched, pitiful cry when I pet him. Diahhrea all over the floors. One mess in the lb. VERY strange that he has not come out for breakfast yet. Poor guy.

I would get FB started on a probiotic (FortiFlora is available online, Pearls can be found in any drug store, or ReNew Ultimate is available at many Whole Foods -- or maybe GNC -- in the refrigerated supplement section) to help with the diarrhea. My guess is that between the higher BG and the diarrhea, that's way FB isn't feeling so great. Pearls are tiny pills. The Renew Ultimate is a capsule and you add about 1/3 of a capsule to food twice a day. Having the runs is pretty common with antibiotics.

I've given Gabby clindamycin as a pill. As long as FB is relatively easy to pill, it shouldn't be a problem.
 
Thanks Sienne. I have a probiotic at home already so will give him a bit of the capsule to see if that helps. He finally came out of the bedroom and had a bit of his breakfast and is sprawled out on the couch in the sun.

The vet was with a patient so I left her a voice message. I wondered if switching to a pill would be better. But since we are skipping the AM antibiotic I'm wondering if we will be able to do the surgery. Also, did some research on Hetastarch and it looks like it might to BG spikes.

So don't like this. Its hard to watch FB not feeling well

I hope the vet got back to you this evening and you got some good advice on the meds. Hopefully Fur Ball can still have the dental and tumor removal. It sounds like it is needed. Sending prayers to you and Fur Ball.
 
Hope Fur Ball is just experiencing a little blip and can get his teeth and tumor taken care of.
Shadow was doing the odd spike thing too and I never knew exactly why although she didn't have any suspect medications. I almost felt like it was her anal glands
or her arthritis which was confirmed by xray.

I also have to ask why they are giving Hetastarch? It's usually given as a bolus and is often given for hypovolemia. I'm not aware of a vet sending Hetastarch home with some....it's not a typical fluid that would be used at home but I'm certain there may be some situations where it would be indicated for home use? I just don't know of them.

Check the acidophilus capsule you have....some of them also have sugar in them (like petdophilus). I use the Renew Ultimate Critical Care. Gracie loves the taste and I can put it in her food instead of giving her another pill or pill pocket.
