Thomas has been on 2 units since last Thursday. Last night I increased to 2.5, based on his lowest numbers being just under 300. I'm feeling quite frustrated with his numbers. I was gone last weekend, then tested every am and pm, and then a curve yesterday. Friday I had jury duty and was able to come home for lunch, not usual, I checked and he was 510! He's had several 400's this week.

My husband and I are starting to suspect that he's going someplace else and eating high carb food. It doesn't seem to be a bounce, it would be several if it was, wouldn't it? We tried keeping him in the house for the curve yesterday, but the magician discovered he could get out the wood flap by the fireplace. We don't use it, its behind the stereo, but he is a crafty cat. Of course, later his numbers shot up again.

We don't want to keep him in all the time.

Oh, I had tried the timed feeder last week but he didn't seem to find it earlier in the day and ate later pushing those numbers up. We think, so I went back to just feeding at shot time.

Any advice?

Ooh, another white kitty. Thomas is very handsome. I wanted to read through your posts to get Thomas' history, but I have to run out the door. Just wanted to say that whenever I increase Klinger's dose, he goes a little higher for a cycle or two - it's called new dose wonkiness (NDW).
Hang in there. You're doing a great job and Thomas seems to be feeling good, which is also very important - not just the numbers.
Have a great day!

Hey Sonya! Welcome back!
Sorry to hear about jury duty. I did that last December, but put myself on their 'on call' list. Got called half way through and sent home after a day. Whew!

I did not realize Thomas was an outdoor cat. That does make things a bit more tricky when it comes to regulating a diabetic cat because you don't know what kind of food they are getting into. There is also a possibility of them not coming home in time for a shot/test, and if they go low they may not have the access to food or ability to get themselves to it in order for there BG to go up to a safe range.

How is the timed feeder working out?

There is almost no chance Thomas will not show up, he never misses a meal. I "adopted" Thomas off the streets. I was living in a townhouse at the time and he was abandoned by someone that moved out. He survived on handouts and was very social, but not very socialized. He's come a very long way, but food will always be something he does not take for granted. He was just over a year when I decided I was going to get him fixed and make him mine. Just to illustrate the difference, at that time the vet had "fractious" written in his file and they had to use a blanket to handle him. Five years later, different vet, but they comment about how sweet he is and easy to handle.

Oh, and he isn't an outdoor cat, he's an indoor/outdoor cat. In other words, he's a fair weather cat who loves sleeping on the bed, or couch.
