last nights 164 is her highest number since otj that I have caught. Ouch....

My brain continued analyzing even though I went to sleep and then woke me up around 4 or so...
thinking about pancreatitis....?

so here are my current thoughts....

we know so little about pre-diabetes in cats....
and not near as much about pancreatitis as diabetes ....

Shadow has been a little off for a while.... I was thinking it was the arthritis.
her appetite is really waning.... she does eat but I have been opening a lot of cans...and throwing them away...
I bought all the new flavors of BFF and a couple of weruva's but I immediately noticed they have the funny smell that Avoderm chicken has.
I think it's the gel they pack with it...
It's an immediate turn off to Shadow. She sniffs and leaves the room.

But she's also walking away from the one's she used to like although she did eat a Cowboy Cookout a couple of days ago without me adding freeze
dried turkey crumbs. ( she usually won't eat that one)
She has acted like she's not feeling so great.... She bit me on tuesday and clawed my lips while laying on me that morning which I thought was a pain
reaction ( but attributed it to arthritis - again.)
And today my DH pushed her over, touching her and she mrowed differently than usual. . . like it hurt a little.
She actually walked away from her raw shrimp last night for her birthday celebration and she never does that. She's usually asking for more.
I even offered her some of the Youngagain dry (my outdoor stray gets that) and she didn't want it either. ( she never was big on dry food so that didn't surprise me but I wanted to see if she would take it)

I am thinking of getting some pepcid ac in a little while to see if it helps with her appetite and see If it makes a difference at all for her.
I figure it can't hurt to try.

I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and try to get an appt but my vet is pregnant and only works at the end of the week. ( part time )
I was planning on doing a senior panel anyway in May so we might as well do that.
Does anyone think I should just go ahead and have them do the spec/fPL test for pancreatitis to either confirm or rule it out? I was thinking I should
because Shadow is very good at hiding pain even when palpatated. But every morning in bed, she fusses at me if I pet her too much and will attack
my hand ( viciously)

And this morning, I tried to push around her anal glands and she objected ( but she doesn't want to be touched there ever anyway)
I will have the vet look at that again too. That definitely has raised her bg in the past.

And then the big question confused_cat
when to start insulin?
I am very worried about starting insulin with her not wanting to eat her food. If she doesn't have her head in the bowl , shots are going to be a huge
fight. They were hard enough when she was so very hungry before. The hunger was my advantage.
It took raw shrimp mixed in her food previously to get her to cooperate for shots yet she doesn't mind being tested at all.

So ... I'm exploring...
and while I don't feel she has full blown pancreatitis like some that I've read with everyone here.....
I'm wondering if she's not moving toward it... (pre-pancreatitis) and feel like I should at least get her tested ....
if anyone knows of something else I should have tested...

and she still has a cyst on her chin....but it's deeper... can't squeeze it...but it's not attached...it's free moving.

Opinions welcome!

If you decide to do the pancreatitis test, ask for the Spec fPL test, and it needs to be a fasting test, so you can plan for that.

I wonder if the cyst on her chin bothers her when she eats. Do you think it does?

I would have the vet look at the cyst. It's an infection that may be causing Shadow to feel lousy and could be effecting her BG numbers. I'd be concerned that it could be an abscess.

I'd get the spec fPL run. It can't hurt.

I don't know.
She does want her throat scratched as she always has. And offers the chin too so it doesn't seem to hurt to touch it.
I tried to poke it with a lancet since I really wish to pop it. (the others ones she had months ago would pop and squeeze out)
This one is much bigger than those.
She didn't seem to object to the poking.... just being held down and positioned so I could see it.

Hi Rhiannon. I'm sorry that Shadow isn't feeling well. Unfortunately I dont have any advice to offer other than to say that if you think there might be a chance of pancreatitis I would get the test done. Regardless of the results you'll know what your next course of action should be. Please know that we have you and Shadow in our Prayers.

I might ask the vet what they think about lancing it in office.

She thought it would go away on it's own but said we could have surgery to remove it. ( of course) but we just did a dental and anesthesia....
I hate to do that again a month later.

I do have a topical antibiotic that is specifically for skin problems (in humans -acne prevention ) it's clindamyacin. I've thought about applying it to the bump.

I would talk to your vet before doing anything. Frankly, poking what could be a zit may cause it to abscess since you may let bacteria in. I also don't know if a cindamyacin ointment is safe for cats.

It's not an ointment...it's a topical solution. I hadn't used it. I have it by the front door to take with me to the vet.

But what about the other issues.
waning appetite and insulin again.

I don't have any advice, but it can't hurt to get the pancreatitis test done just to rule it out if that's not what it is. Sending prayers for you and Shadow.

Good luck getting an early vetty appointment so you can get your questions answered. I too hate the waiting for the office to open.

Id have the test run ...spec fPL.

Usually if you feel something off, it probably is. It's just figuring out what it is.

Gracie had an abscess on her chin last fall and we used the clindamycin topical liquid. Also did warm compresses.

I'd see what the vet says...if there is no infection anywhere, and these above 120 numbers persist without her bringing herself down after she eats, I'd probably think a out starting .1u bid. You might not have to do it long,
