Simon is doing great today -- all P's in place.

I have a question about my civvie, Cleo. She sneezed all last night and is still sneezing today. She ate her breakfast and lunch and is drinking water. She has a very slight colorless discharge from her nose. She has never had allergies before so I am concerned it is respiratory problem. Do you think I can wait until tomorrow when the vet's office is open or should I take her to the ER clinic? Her eyes are a little watery and other than lying around (which she does most days), I don't see anything else that is different. Thanks for your help.

It sounds like an upper respiratory infection (URI) setting in. Those are HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS between cats. If you can seclude your civvie...all the better for Simon. Although he may already have caught the bug and will be showing signs in a few days.

Yes, you should be able to wait for the vet office to open. Most URI are viral in nature and there isn't much to do except isolation. I know with Gary I added a humidifier to his room...although you can do that in a bathroom for 20 minutes or so several times a day. It helps to make them more comfortable by breaking up the congestion. I also read their room should be warm and not chilly.

One thing you can do is to run a hot shower, get the bathroom steamy, and let your civvie hang out in the steamy room. It helps to break up whatever is there.

I'd use a similar rationale for Cleo as for people. If you're seeing anything other than a clear discharge, you may need ABs so a vet visit is in order. If there are other symptoms (e.g., not eating, coughing, lethargy, not groomming, oily coat, fever) I'd also consider a vet visit. Otherwise, I'd get some L-lysine and add 1/8 teaspoon to everyone's food x2/day. It's an immune system booster.

We have L-lysine also.

I took the adopticats (stealing term from Celi) in for sneezing, a bit of congestion and clear dripping from the nose. The vet said it was viral. Only prescribe antibiotics if the discharge is yellow/green.

Sending hugs. Always something lately huh.

Thanks for the quick response. Oh dear on the contagious thing. Simon and Cleo sleep right next to each other at night on the bed. I guess I'll have to separate them tonight -- during the day isn't so much of a problem because Simon likes to hang out downstairs and Cleo upstairs. I already sleep with a humidifier in the room so I'll keep it on during the day, too. It is really warm here today (in the 80's) so our house is pretty warm so that should be good for Cleo.

Sienne, are you saying that basically this is like the common cold and unless I see any other symptoms, I can manage without the vet visit? I have spent so much money on Simon's dental that if I can handle things myself, that will be better. Where do you get the Lysine -- a health food store? Of course, everything is closed today so I'll have to go out tomorrow and get some.

Thanks for your help!

can't seem to get a break, huh?

it's always something....

i can't comment on the cold as neither kid here has had it....so not familiar with it.....

hope Cleo gets better soon....and yes...hope Simon doesn't get sick...the poor guy has been thru enough lately!

(((hugs)))

Hi Karrie and Claudia! I typed my response before I saw your posts. So unless I see a colored discharge, I'm going to just monitor and get the L-lysine. Yes, I am hoping Simon doesn't get the cold on top of the dental and ear issues.

Re: 4/24 Simon AMPS 92 +3 105 +6 124 Civvie has cold

I linked the L-lysine I use in my earlier post. And yes, I was suggesting that unless Cleo is sneezing in technicolor or there are other worrisome symptoms, you can probably manage this yourself.

Re: 4/24 Simon AMPS 92 +3 105 +6 124 Civvie has cold

The link Sienne gave you is the best source, it's the way to go since it is pure L-lysine and quite reasonably priced. However, I would not want to wait for it to arrive before starting, so I would suggest that you look at the health food store or even the grocery store for a bottle of L-lysine so you can start it ASAP. I usually buy Twinlab brand L-lysine at my local grocery store, 500mg capsules. Open the capsule and sprinkle it on the food, 1/2 capsule per kitty, twice a day. Check the ingredients if you buy a different product, you want to avoid any sugar/starch/artificial sweetener ingredients. Tablets can be used as well, you just have to crush them. The dose is usually 250mg twice a day.

Laurie, thanks for the info. I'm going to go first thing in the morning to the health food store right around the corner from me. I'll definitely look at the ingredients. I certainly don't want to get something that will make Simon's bg go back up again!
