I got the following canned response from the makers of PPs...I haven't had a chance to check the drooler version of Duck & Pea, but hopefully they'll be diabetic-friendly.:

Dear Amy:

Thank you for contacting THE NUTRO COMPANY. We appreciate your feedback and the time you took out of your day to contact us. I also received that message.

But isn't this somewhat good news that the canine version is still available? I always bought the canine type anyway. They are just bigger pockets, right? I pinch off just what I needed and put the rest back.

It is definitely good news that the canine version is still available...I had heard somewhere yesterday that it was disappearing, too, so it's nice to know we still have that option.

I also got the stock reply. I don't know if the dog and cat versions are the same except for size. Does anyone have both on hand and can compare them?

Ella

What is the difference? Couldn't pea flour just be ground up dried peas?

ETA - I posted another question on their FB page about it. I'll let you know if they respond.

It usually would be just ground up peas, it's sometimes used as a gluten free alternative to flour. Best to check with the manufacturer on exactly what's in theirs though.

My response. They didn't even tell me about the doggy kind.

Dear Barbara:

hehe i went and bought 5 pouches of the canine ones yesterday. ohmygod_smile the salespeople told me that the canine ones are the same. i would think pea flour was ground up peas and would be the same carbs as peas in any other form.

just a word - the canine CAPSULE ones are bigger than the canine TABLET ones. i didn't realize they were different and bought mostly the tablet ones. so you'd be smarter than me and could buy the capsule forms. we had the canine ones before that i bought accidentally, and they didn't seem to do anything to punkin's numbers.

like cd, we just pinched off some and put the rest back in the pouch.

I got the same canned reply and there are more replies posted in Health, including the comparison of the ingredients linked to above.

I remember a few months ago having a discussion here in LL about the duck and pea pill pockets possibly causing a spike in BG and was referred to a video from Dr Lisa showing how she broke up the pill pockets into tiny pieces and rolled each pill up in a piece of pill pocket rather than using 1 pill pocket for each pill. That was where I read about using the canine ones as the ingredients were the same (equally as non-allergenic) and the only difference was size. Oh, and cost! The canine ones are less expensive.

We cut the feline ones into quarters, using one quarter per pill for Zener. If using the canine ones, we cut them into eights. Liz, the engineer, calculated this, so it is very precise. ;-)

I was put off Pill Pockets forever when I found what looked like a piece of glass in one. Luckily you have to squish them to wrap around the pills so I found it rather than Freckles eating it and getting injured. It was the salmon flavour one and Nutro said it was probably dried scales/fin as they'd had reports of that. It didn't look like scales/fin to me and Nutro's had so many quality issues I just stopped using them and let the pet shop know about it so they could return anything else from that batch they had on the shelf.
