Max woke me twice during the night demanding food. He's drinking more water. He is definitely more active and even got on my bed after eating the second time. Perhaps he ate too much during the second 6 hours. I only gave him about 1/3 a can of fancy feast though.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320

Hi guys .. lots of yellows lately for max .. wonder if today is the day we'll see some nice blues! Have a great day guys!

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324

I wish, Devon. Instead we are back in stinky pink. Did you find a food replacement yet? Have a great day.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324

I hope that Max sees some some lower numbers soon.. Too much stinky pinky!!

You have the information on where to buy the Zobaline now, right? Are you going to try it?

Have you started using the calipers yet? I am getting pretty nervous that even the (f)1.75 might be too much for Rocky..So, that would make the 1.75u not enough and the fat 1.75u perhaps too much. I don't know where to go with this insulin dose now...

Do you think a vet visit for Max might still be a good idea considering that he is now drinking more water? I hope you take him to the vet. I think you should have his kidneys checked. Can you describe the strange sound that he made? When the BG of my little pancreatic cat got too low, and her stomach started to hurt her so much, she let out the most horrible moaning. It was awful and scared me so much. I hope Max isn't in any pain.

I'm sorry that other things aren't going well for you now, Elise. I know it's hard to tell ourselves this but things will get better. Everything is impermanent, ever changing. I'll say some prayers for you both today.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324

Hi Tina. I do plan on taking Max to the vet but I want to get a video of the noise first if possible so that everything that needs to he done can be done all at once. Max gets really stressed, enough to set off a panc attack. He's quiet all day and it happened in the early morning hours. He wasn't low. I checked for that. He is still bouncing. I think. I can't describe the sound. It was almost grunting. Sort of. I will order the zobaline from Amazon today. Thanks.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324

Grunting noise.. hm... have you ever heard Max cough before? Sometimes it can sound like a grunt. Cat's will sometimes make this noise if their pancreas is hurting them.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368

He has coughed in the past but this was different. I've never heard it before. A few times when I picked him up he seemed like maybe he was in pain. He was active, for him, this morning from about 4 a.m. until I left at 8:30. I might try some buprenex if that happens again. He hides things really well like many cats.

I can't figure out how to use the calipers and need to PM Marje at some point. First I need to read the posts on it.I think I will right now.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368

I'm glad you're going to give Max the pain medicine. I don't know why but I have this feeling that he needs it. You know that you put that medication on his upper gum, right? You squirt it onto their gums rather than onto their tongue or down their throat. It is effective in reducing the pain within minutes. Max may suddenly fall asleep after you do it too, but that is Ok because if he has been keeping you up at night it means that he hasn't been sleeping at all either. So neither of you have been getting the rest that you need to heal the body. I was told by my vet that I could dose my cat every 8 hours, not every 12 hours, with the Buprenor if her pain was not subsiding.

You might also want to consider adding maybe another teaspoon or two of water to his Fancy Feast?? Getting more fluids into him will help the pancreas.

You should also ask Marje if there is a video on how to use the calipers. I would be interested in watching it too. :-D I found the video on how to get insulin out of a Solaris Pen very good and it helped me a lot. I don't think I'll be able to understand how to use the calipers without watching a video on it. I don't think I'm very bright in figuring out new things. :? I need the "show me" tutorials.

Just curious, how does Max's breath smell right now?

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368

Yes, a video would be great but I couldn't find one. I did learn how to clean calipers though.

I'm not convinced he us in pain considering that he had a good appetite when this happened. My concerns are kidney, hyoer-t, uncontrolled high BP or too low due to white coat syndrome, neuropathy, or flip flopping uncontrolled diabetes. I just don't think it's pancreatitis since his appetite overall is so good.

His breath is normal by the way.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368

I haven't used calipers before, but the way i understand it is that you take one of your current syringes and use the markings off of it to "set" a caliper dose. So if you want 1.75 as the dose, set the calipers against the 1.75 on the syringe. then for all future shots, you use the caliper as your measuring tool instead of the markings on the syringe.

I think you could go back to 2.0 for max. he doesn't look like he's bouncing now and unless he comes down into greens tonight (which is 3 days following his last green night) you may want to give him a little more juice. but if you want to figure out the calipers first, that might make sense.

How is your mom doing? I haven't been able to get on the board for more than a few minutes at a time since Sunday. I see lots of other posts, so maybe it wasn't everyone, but i couldn't get anything to post. Sorry things are rough for you right now. :YMHUG:

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368

Max, time to ditch those pinks for something a little lower please. I hope the dosecrease will get him going again and that his tummy feels better soon.

The only thing I'd add to Julie's description of using the calipers, is to first get a good "used" syringe and fill it with some colored liquid. Then set the dose as you did this morning. Then measure that with the calipers and you can lock in to that dose. If you do go up to 2.0U tonight, maybe set the calipers to that. Then it's easier to do calculations to figure out the in between dosing. In other words, if you have a measurement for a 2U dose, then 1/8 of that is what makes a .25U dose. For me on the BD's, a .25U changes means a .4mm change. So I can go up to a fat dose by making a .2mm change. I think the measurement for 1U is different for each type of syringe manufacturer so the same numbers won't work for you.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368

I thought that was what you do with the calipers but then I wasn't sure if you set the calipers to the desired amount.

Max is a mess and so am I. Now I think he has asthma. He just sounded like he was trying to throw up a hairball so I went in to him. He had managed to get up the tiniest piece of fur. That didn't make him feel any better. So I tried to brush him but he kept walking away from me. He purred a little but it didn't sound right. I am going to try to see my vet tomorrow or Friday.

In addition to all my previous worries now my mom needs surgery on her finger with gout that she has been complaining about and was told to leave it be. Two surgeries.

I don't think I can take much more. Time to test Max. I did and he's 380. I am going to give him 2 units in a 15 minutes.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380

Elise, you definitely shouldn't feel like you need to delete your post. Although we can't solve all of the problems you're dealing with right now, we can listen and support you. I know you're overwhelmed and exhausted right now. Just take a deep breath and focus on one small step at a time.

I am keeping Max, your mom, and you in my prayers. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

Thanks,Shelly. Tomorrow is Jersey's big day. I am sooo happy for you. I hope you get used to no ear pricks. I meant to post on you condo but I've been too upset today.

Tina, if you go to the main board you will see someone posted an updated list with foods under 8% carbs with the phos %. I printed it and will scrutinize it carefully if Max's test show his kidneys are taking a hit from the ff classics. I think I will anyway as before FD hit I was already phos phobic because both of my other cats had CRF. Speaking of food my friend that used Wild Calling is stopping and going back to NV. She said there is bad quality control. I also was reading that if you add boiled chicken to the cat food even though it is protein it will cut the phos in the cat food. Is that true?

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

Elise,
I am so sorry you are having a rough time.

If you to go YouTube and search "Feline asthma", there are many videos of cats having asthma attack, and you can compare the sound Max is making with them.
Does he sound like this? : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuNy_WubRrI

Sending many prayers for Max to feel better.
And for your mom's surgery to go smoothly too.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

Hi Mariko. I did look on Utube. Some do and some don't. When he was younger and eating mostly dry food he would vomit cigars and that looked like asthma videos too. I just know something is wrong besides FD and I don't think it is pancreatitis. His appetite is too darn good.

The food list was compiled by Rhiannon.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

I just got home from work but as soon as we eat dinner, we're going to try and do a video to show you all how to use the calipers. So hang on tight and check back later. :-D :-D

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

Thank you, Marje. I tried to do it but not sure how well.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

Lucy has (had?) mild asthma, which has been under control since steroids.
She was give steroids not only because of asthma, but also IBD.
Before prednisolone, she used make some funny noises, which were very hard for me to explain to the vet (I did my best to mimic the sounds).
Sometimes it sounded like grunting, and sometimes it sounded like reverse sneezing.
But these sounds could be a lot of other things.
Ginger makes the grunting sounds when *I think* she has some hairballs stuck somewhere that aren't moving up or down.
I usually give her some hairball remedy, something oily to help hairballs move.

If at the next vet appointment your vet thinks Max has asthma and wants to give him steroids, I think it would be good if you insist on a puffer rather than stuff like pred.
Prednisolone makes it much harder to manage FD. :-x
Lucy needs pred because of IBD and asthma, and she has been taking it way before FD, so we do our best, but if she didn't have IBD, I would have switched to puffer.....

But you know... I thought it was a bit odd for Max to develop asthma at the age of 16, unless there was some changes in the environment, like pollution related........so probably something else.......
Whatever it is, I hope that it's something that can be treated easily and quickly.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

Thanks for the info Mariko. He did sound like he was grunting. Today he had his third episode. I sure hope I am wrong and that whatever it is, it is treatable. This has never happened before. I sure hope he doesn't need pred. I'm having a hard enough time trying to regulate him.

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

This is so unusual. I can't imagine what could cause grunting. I hope you can figure out what it is.

The caliper video is done and I"m just waiting for it to upload to youtube. It's too late to help you tonight but maybe tomorrow. So sorry.....

Re: 4/23Max AMPS 320+4=324+6=368PMPS 380 Dosecrease

Thanks, Marje. He's still real high at +3 so I don't think I need to test him again tonight. I'll watch the video. I put plastic in the litter pan to check for ketone but I put too much litter on it this time so he managed to cover it all. Foolish cat. I'll try tomorrow.

Try to get some rest, Elise. I want to look at his SS and read back over the condos from the last few days. I've had a difficult time getting on the board. I'll see if I can spot anything at all on his SS that might help.

Here's the Dosing with Calipers VIDEO. It's pretty rough but hopefully you can get the idea. Please let me know if you have questions.

Nothing stood out at me on his SS. I'm glad you increased and I'm hoping using the calipers will take some of the variation out of it.

Sending prayers for you and your mom.

Thanks Marje. I don't think this is diabetes related. I think it might be respiratory now. He kind of grunts and is noisy when he eats. I'm leaving a message for my vet when they open to see if he can get me in today or tomorrow. Maybe this might be effecting the FD.
