4/23 Tessie Lou AMPS 274 PMPS 258 Bupe Report

This condo is about 12 hours later than I had planned, but oh well.

Today, DH and I managed to get the bupe in Tessie's mouth, and yes, it is definitely helping. She acts more relaxed, and sleeps sounder. So that's very encouraging. I mistyped in yesterday's post about the dose. It is .15ml bid, not 1.5ml! Yikes! Well, you probably all knew what I really meant.

I'm rethinking starting the prednisolone on Monday. I want to give the bupe and Pepcid a few days onboard, and then do a curve to see how it's affecting her numbers. I just think the pred is a big step, and I'm not sure it's time for that yet.

Claudia, thanks for all the info in my condo yesterday. Do you remember how high Rocket's fPLI number was? Just wondering how high Tessie's number is in relation to others who have been diagnosed. Hers was 6.3 I think. I know of one other person who's cat was 18. So, in relation to that, Tessie's really not that high...?

Thanks to everyone for the good thoughts for Tessie. We hope all is well with you and yours...and speaking of yours, I'm going to go catch up on as many condos as I can and see what's going on with everyone. I've really fallen behind!

Sandy: are you putting the bupe next to her gum on the gum tissue instead of squirting it where she'll swallow it? It's best to put the syringe up against the gum near the inside of the cheek and slowly put it in so it can get on the gum and absorb. I do a little on Gus's right side, then left...just a little at a time and then rub the outside of his gum so he's not swallowing it. Hope she continues to improve without pred.

Marje, I did better with tonight's dose. it didn't appear that she swallowed it. I sure wish it was in pill form--she loves pill pockets. I don't like the idea that it can so easily be ingested by swallowing. :YMSIGH: I'm going to talk to vet Monday about maybe finding a pill form I can give her.

sorry to reply late in your condo....but better late than never....

just to clarify some of the questions you may still have....
prednisolone is to take care of the inflamation.....brings the swealling down that is caused by the CP flare up....
buprenorphine (known as bupe here or buprenex) is for pain....it does not take the swealling down or away...

Rocket's fPLI back Nov 2010 when he came off remission was 7.7 then tested again in Jan 2011 and was 4.4

fPLI results are a snapshot in time meaning that perhaps Tessie Lou's numbers may have been higher or lower before or after the test was done....that's why vets tend to Rx the pred and pain meds....trying to help kitties feel better....Rocket was eating all along so sometimes a CP flare may not be noticeable to us humans since we know cats tend to hide pain so well....so it is not always a given they are in pain from the flare up if they are eating....see where i'm getting with this?

Rocket was eating fine at the time of the flare up and we were not given pain meds...only to be in agony when the test in Jan was done at only 4.4

also keep in mind that the pred and bupe for a CP flare up are not meant to be given LONG term....vets usually Rx only for 1 week max...hoping that alone will take care of the flare up....with Rocket it is a different situation in using the pred and bupe long term...as it is for his cancer more than his CP....
