I suspect your vet opted to use a fast acting insulin like R since you had withheld insulin the morning of the dental. R is in and out very quickly and you can give multiple doses the way the vet did. I also suspect that Elian was being closely monitored.
Personally, I would not vote in favor of your using R at the moment. Most cats go through a period of bouncing at the initial stages of their diabetes. It's hard to know how long they've been in high numbers prior to diagnosis. As a result, their bodies become acclimated to the higher numbers which can account for at least some of the bounciness. There are several people here who use R. Should you decide that it's something you want to consider,
Dyana and Libby are experienced users. For now, I'd want wait a bit longer to see if Elian can begin to bring his numbers into a more consistent range on his own. But, that's one person's opinion.
