Re: 4/22 Pepper AMPS 198

I know this may sound strange, however, try feeding him only Cod, Sole, Salmon flavor of the FF for a few days and see what his BG's will look like. Could be the carb content in the salmon, which is 3% (according to the food list), the 4% carbs in the chicken that may be keeping him a bit high. All you can do is experiment, and see what works to flatten those #s down in the mid cycle. I know some people feed their kitties more than 1 flavor for various reasons. Just a thought. This morning's # looks good, though. :-D

Also, and again, according to your schedule, try feeding him mini meals throughout the day, and only a certain amount. Again, it may help, and it may not. The downside of this is that you may need to weigh his food, and give him a certain amount each time. I know you don't want to overfeed, nor do you want to underfeed. Again, it's all about experimenting. Try one thing, and if that doesn't work, try something else. Eventually, you'll get something to work, and then you can go "Ah ha!!! I found it!" :-D

Re: 4/22 Pepper AMPS 198

Hi Angela. I was actually thinking along those lines today. I was going to try just one flavor - but my food list from Dr. Lisa (dated September 2012) says the Fancy Feast Savory Salmon is only 1% carbs, and the Cod/Sole/Shrimp is 4%, so I was trying Savory Salmon today. But I looked up the older list that I had printed out and it says that Savory Salmon is 3% and Cod/Sole/Shrimp is 2%. So which is most accurate? Plus, I'm giving him a smaller portion at AMPS - 1/2 can instead of a whole can (he's hungry in the morning!). We'll see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions! I can use all the help I can get!

Nancy, when Dr. Lisa posted her updated list in Health, she said not to get too tied to the carb % in the list. Because of changes in manufacturing and product sourcing, what is 4% one day could be 3% the next. If they are only 1% apart, I'd treat them as essentially the same. I do like Angela's suggestion of just trying one flavour for a while. Some people have noticed that certain proteins have more of an effect on BG's that others (ie. chicken spikes but turkey does not).

Neko gets four proteins in rotation and they vary from 3-5%. I don't notice any difference in what proteins she eats. Where I notice more of a difference is when she eats. Are you feeding the same amounts at the same times in both cycles? Neko gets the same amounts both cycles, except she gets a 1% snack at AM+9 and her PMPS is generally better than her AMPS. Just wondering the schedule for Pepper, because his AMPS always looks better than his PMPS.

Re: 4/22 Pepper AMPS 198, +3 305, +5.5 328

Hi Wendy. Pepper eats essentially the same amounts in his AM and PM cycle at pre-shot and +3, but during the AM cycle he gets a meal at +5.5 or +6 - because he's really, really hungry. That might be the culprit, but like I said, he's really, really hungry at that time - I don't know if he would be OK with not getting his AM +6 meal.

Re: 4/22 Pepper AMPS 198, +3 305, +5.5 328

Neko is really, really hungry at +9.5 - same as Pepper is at +5.5, so she also gets an extra snack in the AM cycle. I give her a zero carb treat (freeze dried something or other - chicken breast, quails neck, duck tongue or a piece of raw chicken neck) plus a tsp of 1% carb. Pepper seems to be headed up before +5, so I wouldn't think the later snack would impact him. Feeding before nadir shouldn't be that much of an issue.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying. Is it OK to give him his +6 meal? I have to confess, It's usually more than a teaspoon.

Re: 4/22 Pepper AMPS 198, +3 305, +5.5 328

I think that if you feed the majority of his food in the first half of the cycle, you should be OK. Just nothing after 2 hours before PS. The working pancreas changes things a bit. Today I gave Neko her usual +9.5 snack when she was at 115. She surfed there for few hours, then the pancreas kicked in and dropped her for PS. I've heard it can take 2-3 hours for the pancreas to do it's job. That's a trick that works for Neko, but not always.

I was just curious if there was a reason Pepper has much nicer AMPS than PMPS. Neko is the opposite and I'm trying to figure out a way to lower her AMPS.

I'm going to have to find the right time of feeding for Lucky back to 444 for his +2 pm. glad Im not alone with a high tonight ;-)
