? 4/22 - Chloe - Adjust PM dosage? AMPS 105 (11 hours from PM shot), +4=117, +7=31, +7.5=50

Should I adjust her PM dosage, or leave it at 1u? Being that she's at 31, it makes me nervous that she's so low. She's not displaying ANY of the typical symptoms she normally does when she's really low, and definitely nothing like when she went DKA. In fact, I just gave her more food and she gobbled it up. These are new strips - maybe a week old, so I'm a bit surprised at the low # and none of the visual symptoms.

For those following, I updated my signature to reflect the updated age, food and upcoming travel.

Thank you. I thought we were settled after doing this in 2015/16, but I guess not! I'm just thankful and feel exceptionally blessed that my Chloe is here almost 3 years after that horrible DKA experience where 2 vets told me to put her down.... :( This cat has 90 lives! ;)

With Lantus, you don't just adjust the evening dose or the morning dose, you change the dose for both morning and evening. So you're going to go down to 0.75 tonight, and tomorrow morning, and stay with 0.75. The tests you'll manage to get in during the cycle will tell us how she is doing on that dose. It might take a few days to see what the dose is really doing.
 
Just to further clarify Stephanie's comment, your new dose for Chloe is 0.75u. That is her dose until the numbers indicate she needs more insulin or she drops below 40 which indicates she needs less insulin. Whatever you can do to get spot checks during both the AM and PM cycles will help you figure out what's going on.

I really appreciate how hard it is to work full time and manage your cat's diabetes. I was in the same situation. Things like a timed feeder help. When I was in Chicago, if necessary, i could get home at lunch to check on Gabby. I also adjusted my shot time based on her onset and nadir. There's a sticky at the top of the board that addresses how to do TR and work/go to school full time. There may be some ideas that are applicable to Chloe.

Regarding ketones, had you considered getting a ketone meter? The strips are pricey but unless a cat is experiencing high ketones, you don't need to test all that often. You use a meter just like you would for testing glucose (it's a blood ketone meter) so you don't have to stalk your cat to the litter box. PrecisionXtra and NovaMax both make ketone meters.

You mentioned that you'll be traveling. A couple of thoughts... You may want to adjust Chloe's dose to a bit less. A lot will depend on how well your sister will be able to test. If you've not already done so, you might want to see if she's able to test -- or if Chloe will let her, before you leave town. Is your sister staying at your home? If not, I would definitely reduce Chloe's dose unless ketones are a concern. Many cats don't eat well when their people aren't around or if their routine is changed. I'd also suggest leaving a sample syringe set at Chloe's dose. Use a colored liquid so the amount is visible.This will give your sister a comparison. (It may sound redundant but we had someone's roommate give his cat 5u when the dose was actually 0.5u. The roommate didn't realize how the syringes were calibrated.)

 
@Sienne and Gabby (GA) - My sister is a cat mama to 4, but none are diabetic. She got Chloe for me nearly 16 years ago (Christmas present 2002) and was the cat whisperer of our family. I never even had an interest in cats really until my boyfriend (now husband) was going away for the military. Over the years, I've dealt with a lot with Chloe being dx with diabetes and she never has dealt with that, but I really believe that she will be able to care properly for Chloe. If not, the last and worst scenario is to have her boarded at the vet - which is 2 blocks from my house. She'll be arrive 2 days before we leave and I plan to have her do all of Chloe's testing/feeding/shots, etc. It will be tough as she usually smells like her kitties, but I'm hoping that with the new catnip toys I've ordered and some skillful planning, she will be a-ok. Yes, she is housesitting for us - we flew her up so that we didn't have to board Chloe for that long. She goes crazy when she's boarded - and fortunately and unfortunately my sister is between jobs and has the flexibility. We have had to scale back our travels quite a bit, as I'm so afraid to leave her - but this has been a year in the making and for a pretty major event.

Great idea on the syringe! Those lines are tiny and I've been trying to think how to have it easy for her to see. I plan to show her all of the ins and outs of this - I have a document that I've been in the process of making and the part about Chloe takes up most of it! lol Yes, our kitties are high maintenance, but she is our only pet now and I've had her since before my husband and I were married and we'll be married 15 years this summer. I wish I could keep her forever!

If anything, Chloe gets a bit anxious and may eat more. I'm not sure. Her eating has drastically reduced now that she's more regulated - but we leave the TV on when we're gone, lights on, etc. just to help when we leave for long periods of time. But, again, now that she's regulated better, she's not as anxious.

I'll work on getting that ketone reading. In fact, I set up her box a while ago, I'm going to check now before bed.
