Hi everyone.

Barry (OTJ since 10/09 & incorrectly diagnosed with HCM until having a cardiac ultrasound 2 weeks ago) and Paisley (Lantus & previous UTI) had their dental cleanings yesterday. Barry had one extraction - a canine that had broken at the pulp. It's been broken for a long time. Their dental "health" was Grade 2 (gingivitis). Barry's was moderate. Paisley's was moderate to severe. They were both given injections of sustained release bupe for pain. It's supposed to last three days.

They were also both prescribed ClindaCure (clindamycin HCL liquid). I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on how necessary it is. Do vets generally prescribe it just as matter of course? It's absolutely horrid stuff and contains alcohol. Barry got one dose this afternoon and totally flipped out from the taste and, I'm assuming, the alcohol (8.64%) on sensitive gum and where the tooth was pulled. If he flipped out like that, Paisley will be much worse. I can handle that though if necessary.

Neither were prescribe an antibiotic pre-dental so things couldn't have been that infected. I did ask if they needed it and was told no.

Paisley was on antibiotics for a couple weeks starting 3/31 for an infection. Temp of 103.8F. Vet figured it was probably bladder infection that hadn't really cleared despite what other clinic said or maybe dental). We'll be checking back on the UTI to be certain it's gone. New vet seems to have a much better handle on the UTI issue.

My inclination is to take the bottles to the local animal shelter. I'm certain they could use it.

Thanks for thoughts and suggestions.

Re: 4/21 Paisley & Barry - ClindaCure after dental- necessar

My vet has given an antibiotic post-procedure depending on what was going on. A bad case of gingivitis or if there was any potential issue with the extraction may warrant an AB. When my vet used an AB, she gave Gabby a clindamycin injection.

If you search on Health, Dr. Lisa has posted on the use of ABs with dental procedures. In short, she believes that they are to be used when warranted and should not be prescribed simply as a matter of course.

I've never got the Clindacare from my vets after a dental. If there is infection they usually give penecillin injections (lasts for 5 days) and is easy to give via injection. If it is the alcohol that is the issue I know you can get rid of it with tinctures/suspesions and may be able to do the same with this - ask the vet to make sure as heat may harm the antibiotic. Heat a pan of water to boiling and reduce the heat to low so its just a low simmer. Take the top off the bottle of meds and place them in the water - the water should just come halfway up the sides of the bottle. After a couple of minuts all the alcohol will have evaporated. After removing the alcohol you'll usually need to keep the bottle in the fridge as alcoholmis used as a preservative.

punkin ended up on clindamycin after his dental last year. he had 2 extractions, one sounded similar to what you're describing - the tooth was broken off from the roots. he didn't come home with ABs and the infection developed later.

we had clindamycin in capsules compounded at the local compounding pharmacy. i wrapped them in pill pockets and pushed them down his throat for 18 days. on day 18 he "woke up" and decided he liked the taste. after that i threw them on the floor and he gobbled them down. with anya (civvie) i've given her little balls of the pill pockets to get her to like them so if i give her pills in the future she'll take them easily. you might try giving some empty balls of them and then add in the pills later. the duck & pea pill pockets are ok for diabetics. the others have corn syrup.

in the situation you described, i wouldn't hesitate to use the AB's. punkin ended up with 40 days because of not starting with ABs.

When BigMac had two extractions he was prescribed clindamycin. I asked for the liquid because I thought it would be too hard to pill, but my vet said the liquid tastes extremely bad and that I would have much better luck getting a pill down the throat.

I bought a pill popper... which is just a narrow tube that holds the pill and then you push gently to release it. You use it instead of your fingers so if the kitty bites down, no harm no foul. I originally thought it might be something cool that shot the pill with some velocity down the hatch, hahaha! But no, it is just a holder to save your fingers. I found it easy to use so the pill could be further back into the throat, then I followed it with a squirt of water from a liquid med syringe.

Maybe you could ask your vet to replace the nasty liquid with the capsules.

BigMac was funny with pill pockets. He liked to chew them carefully no matter how tiny a ball - even without a pill. So when I tried to stick a pill in there, he carefully ate everything around it an spit out the pill. Sigh....

Best of luck.
